I am going to work through the standard 36/36 warranty and look at a Honda Care warranty before it runs out. I did the same with my Z06 and just called up dealers all over the midwest and ended up getting a great price on a GM provided extended warranty. I also used it twice and it easily paid for itself, so for performance cars, ESPECIALLY ones that have a turbo, I'm all about a comprehensive extended warranty. I typically don't go third party. We got an extended warranty on my wife's Mini Countryman JCW, and sure enough, they had to replace the turbo....$2800 I did not have to pay out of pocket.

Just FYI rates and plans change after 6,000 miles for extended warranties.

Before 6k miles, you qualify up to 8 years/120,000 miles

info from: http://nationalhondacare.com/ (I bought mine from Saccucci Honda)

Based on past experiences I'll never buy an extended warranty again. Either I've never had to use it or it doesn't cover the problem, either way money wasted. Let's just say my finance guy was pissed when I turned down the extended warranty when I bought my CTR.
For just under $1000 to extend it up to 7 years and 100k miles I think that's a pretty fair price. Dont pay anything more than that. He was probably trying to sell you a marked up plan. I originally paid double for lesser coverage at the dealer I bought my car at.

IMO in 7 years there's a lot to break that costs more than $900.

Other extended warranties that paid off for me:
1. AppleCare. Got a new macbook pro.
2. Android Protect or whatever that is. Got replacement phone after my nexus 6p battery died.

I did not realize that about the mileage. Appreciate the heads up!

No, never.

When I worked as a tech it was always a disaster getting these extended warranties to cover anything. And when they did, they insisted on sourcing the parts themselves, so you'd always get some rattle can restore transmission or something, and the customer would be back in a month. There were a couple times I remember we refused to do the service because we knew the outcome would be bad, and once where we ate the cost on a new part just to move the customer.

Doesn't sound like you're talking about Hondacare.

I learned two lessons buying my car:
1. Don't buy 3rd party warranties.
2. Don't buy Hondacare when purchasing your car unless they will price match any of the dealers that sell contracts online. Hyannis, saccucci, etc. All sell them nearly at cost (it seems). If you are paying over $1k for anything less than 7/100k you paid too mich

No, that wasn't available at the time. However, it's a Honda. Self-warrantying like others have talked about is a better financial decision. If you service your vehicle at the dealer, they are (were) usually on your side trying to get stuff goodwilled by corporate, even if it's just some help on the cost. Like others have said - there's a reason they sell these services, and its not because they love you.

On a side note, if you're buying a used car, find one that has a "Certified Used" warranty on it, and then ask them to discount the car by not including the warranty. You'll get a much better deal, and all the worn or bad parts have already been replaced with OE parts during recon so you're getting the benefit without the cost.

i personally have a zurich extended warranty for 10 years/100k miles on mine. with this being a brand new vehicle with lots of new components honda has never used before i had no problem purchasing the warranty. i see lots of examples of customers saving lots of money thanks to extended warranties. a very good example of this is just earlier this week i had a 2013 pilot come in with a locked up ac compressor. long story short the part alone was over $1000 (crazy i know) after parts and labor the final price was around $1500-all covered by the extended warranty company. that one repair alone made the purchase worth it

Everybody is saying they didn't get it or want to see about canceling. One even said it doesn't cover the factory head unit. Is that true and what doesn't it cover that people wish it should.

From what I skimmed I interpreted it as it covered the stock head unit just not an aftermarket non Honda head unit. Is that the correct interpretation or does it not cover the factory one either?

I am debating on buying Honda Care from an online dealer for my Type R and wife's pilot.

What do you mean they took it for a joyride? They gave you an extended warranty for the ride?

I had it in for service, and the Service Advisor decided to take the car on the freeway and redlined it from 1st to 2nd to 3rd, causing the whole car to shake violently. Car only had 1500 miles on it too. Caught it on a dashcam and went to the Service Manager about it.

Good that you caught it. I would have been furious as well. Advisor lose their job as they should have for that... This is just one of the many reasons why I hate going to dealers where I can't keep my eye on my car at all times.

Dude straight up called me nuts to my face. If I didn't want the car so bad then I probably would've said some choice words to him and walked out.
This exactly.

The finance manager was really nice up until I asked to see the contracts and then he started talking about how we'd be there all day if I sat and read through them and why didn't I trust him because he only had my best interest at heart. Gave me 2 or three sob stories about his friends and his son having cars with issues and kept insisting that Honda doesn't make cars like they used to. He was very upset when I didn't take any of the extended warranty/care plans.

I was wondering by the end what kind of salesperson tells the buyer that the car they're getting isn't as good as older cars...oh well

I typically wouldn't pull the trigger on an extended warranty, but I have in the past on first year cars. I thought about it when I bought this one and purchased it. Glad I did. Already had 2k worth of wheels and tires covered. I know you guys are referring to a mechanical warranty, but I'm including the wheel coverage as part of the whole package. With a first year car there's a LOT of kinks to be worked out, even Honda. Just take a look at the " Repairs, Issues" thread. I just have a good feeling I'll be needing it down the road.
