TL;DR: If the car is running, how far can the key be taken from the car before the car shuts off?

Hey all,

I introduced myself and asked a few questions already in the DFW regional thread but figured I'd branch out a bit. I'm currently selling my car (Lexus GX470) and beginning the hunt for a 2018 Civic Si. I've been doing a lot of browsing and reading on the forums here for the past few days. I have an extensive background of auto forums so I know the answer to most questions is "use the search bar, idiot!" But i still have a question I haven't been able to find an answer to. I've noticed that no Si is offered with remote start. I realize this is because of the manual transmission. Living in Texas and having to park the car outside while at work, temps in the car are likely to get up to 140 degrees during the day and make getting in the car miserable at the end of the day. My question is this... how far can you be away from the car once it's running? Ideally I'd like to be able to get off work, stop in the parking lot on my way to the locker room, start the car, and then continue to the locker room to change and get ready to go home. Is this possible? Will I be able to start the car and then take the key with me about 75 yards away and have the car running and cooling down the whole time? Or will it time out at some point of not sensing the key and shut off? Honestly, I could leave the key in the car and not worry about it as I work at a pretty secure place. But I'd still like to be able to take the key with me if possible just as a safety precaution.

Thanks in advance for the help.

The car won't turn off regardless of how far the key is, that's a failsafe in case the key fob battery dies or you somehow drop the key out of the window, or some other ludacris event. Keep in mind if the fob is low power enough you have to put it right against the start button to start the car. Therefore anything further than that the car doesn't know it exists at all.

Your call will just beep obnoxiously then keep running. However I do find the need to say that's a lot of unneeded idling and someone could easily take your car.

it dies if you try to put it in drive without the key.

Idling for 5 minutes or so while I run in to change clothes is a lot? I better turn the thing off at red lights too, then!

I doubt that as I'm talking about manual transmissions. Going to try tomorrow though; I assume by drive you mean first gear.

I hope you're right, that would be a smart failsafe.

I was just saying, it's highly possible it would take you much longer than 5 minutes. Just felt I needed to add that, I wouldn't have said anything if I wasn't also answering your question.

And you're welcome for answering your question by the way.

yeah I wandered into the Si section again. I always just look at new posts, and don't bother to look where they are posted.

I'm sure the Si has something similar where it either dies when you put it in gear, or push in the clutch.

I start my car every morning in my driveway and then walk inside make my coffee and grab other stuff. Sometimes I a very far away and car continues to idle. It does beep annoyingly when you leave with key but I don’t think it continues to beep. My guess there isn’t a limit to distance away. I think there is a timer to limit it to 10 minutes though b

If it's the same as my civic hatch then it's 15 minutes before it will turn itself back off

You can lock your car with the key while it is stated if you are worried. But you have to take this strange looking metal doohickey and put it in the door and twist.

That's interesting, because my friend was late for work and forgot to turn off her 17 civic EX and it was idling for over 5 hours in the parking lot unlocked. She had half a tank of gas when she parked and barely any gas left when she found out. :banghead: This is not the stupidest thing she's done either.

Thanks for the responses everyone. Sounds like I should be alright if I take the key inside with me. Like I said, if it does end up shutting off after some period of time I can just leave the key in the car. Cant wait to get my car sold and purchase my Si!

The Si will yell at you if you leave it running and walk away from the car but I don't think it turns itself off.
