Should I get a Type R? Looking for a more fun car, not a track car

I'm looking for a more fun car. I want to get back into a manual. I don't have family and I'm not hauling a lot of stuff regularly.

I've always wanted a Type R and I love the way the FK8 looks. However, if I'm being honest, I drive like a grandpa 90% of the time. I would never approach the limits of a Type R. One of the first things I'd do is swap out the tires for something softer and all season. This would be my DD. Is it still worth it?

I'm also considering a Fiesta ST - they're heavily discounted and I've actually test driven one. It's fun but they're so small, the interior is shitty and it's a Ford. This could potentially be my DD or a second car.

Anyways, any thoughts would be welcome.

I would recommend the type R , I don’t push mine that often but it’s actually a fun car even to drive at low speeds. I agree with you on changing the wheels and tires. My car became easier to live with after I put on 18s. I would say stay away from Ford mainly due to reliability and loss of value.

Get the R! I daily my car. The only downside is the MPG compared to the ST. But, I have a lead foot and love a little spirited driving every so often. Not my fault the car just screams go go go...

OP We have an R with mods that we sometimes daily on 18's. I could with very little persuasion drive it everyday. Its fuel economy is ok and I love the ride on my new wheels. The car is great crusing and setting the asphalt on fire. You won't regret it. If you do change your mind you didn't oay a lot to drive it around and then turn around and sell it.

I just got my Type-R three weeks ago. I live in canada and it's my DD. I don't drive like a madman but play with it about 10% of the time. I am going to slap 18's on it for the winter. I do not ever plan to track the car....i have just always been a car enthusiast who loves power but use it at the appropriate times. I absolutely love it as my DD. I had a mazdaspeed3....WRX and 2018 hatch sport...now i have this and love this car more than any i have ever owned. Don't think twice...get it. I even had my ECU unlocked and intalled my Ktuner V1.2 last night :)

I assume you're getting the answers you'd expect on a Honda board, but Type R all the way. I've had mine for six months, it's my DD and I drove through the winter on 18s with all season tires. I now have summer tires on 19" wheels, though this car will never see the track. I don't push it too much, but it still puts a smile on my face every time I get in.

Pull the trigger and buy a Type R. It's 100% usable as a daily driver.

I was originally going to buy a GTI; never even considered the Type R until my dad brought it up. I'm glad he did.

Thanks for the great responses.

- Do you attract any negative attention? Like cops? How many of you have been pulled over?
- How is the Type R in rain and light snow? Assuming all seasons for snow.
- Anyone know if maintenance will be back breaking later on? I know Honda's are known for reliability, but will something like the rev match system be a bitch/expensive to fix after the warranty?

I may be able to get a new Fiesta for like 14k+ttl. I think depreciation on that will be significantly less than the Type R, unless they cease imports for whatever reason.

What'd you do with your stockies? Were you able to sell them to someone else?

1. I never even got a glance from a cop, but i live in NY and there are STI's and modded out cars all over the place, so cant say for sure. And i try to behave on public roads...(Sometimes)
2. The car handles well in the rain, only gotten mine for 1 1/2 months so havent tested on snow yet. but coming from a 9th gen Si with stock tires. i dont think there will be any issues, just need a winter set up.
3. I opted for the honda care, which covers 7yrs, not sure how much it would be if things did go wrong, its too early to say, perhaps others can chime in.

And I dont see the Type R depreciating a lot, and will retain more value than the ST, but the ST may retain a better value as they are stopping production in the US.

You’ll attract attention, both positive and negative. This car was not made to just blend in. :) I have been pulled over, but, I missed a stop sign and the cop yelled at me let me go with a warning (didn’t even check my license or anything - or tell me I’m missing a front plate!). I don’t think cops will single you out unless you are really doing something dumb (like more than 10 over).

It handles great in the rain, and I’m still on my OEM tire and wheel setup. I can’t speak for snow..for obvious reasons.

Also, I may try to track my Type R at some point, but I bought it for the same reason as you are thinking, amazing performance, great value, and ability to use as a daily driver. Make no mistake - you can drive as slow as everyone else if you want...and if you want to turn up the fun factor to 11, you can do that at any time.

OP, why are you cross shopping a Fiesta ST with a CTR? Their price point and performance levels are light years apart so it's going to be hard to compare.
