Update: Getting new brake pads installed all around and it’s $965 + tax. I opted to keep the front rotors until my next pad replacement (they can’t be machined), so that will be about another $425 the next time I replace the pads.

Still love the car, but tires and brakes are definitely an eye opener lol.
thats insane. That's a total rip off for just pads. I can do pads by myself in like a hour at home....

From what I understand the Brembos are a bit more difficult than standard calipers

... but not $500 more difficult

its easier than a sliding caliper imo. You just remove the slide pins, pull out the metal clip and the pads and then reverse for install. There's no bolts to remove, just the clips for the pins if your only doing pads.

as a tech that works at the dealership i love brake work! its great and easy money. for example replacement of pads and resurfacing the rotors pays 2.4. (front or rear) our labor rate is $110, so thats $264 just in labor and about another $100 for pads (not type r pads). i totally agree the prices are ridiculous but i dont make the labor rate times. just makes me glad i can do all my own work.

It's really not. You don't even have to clamp the piston like you have to in a floating caliper.

I totally agree.
I used to work as a mechanic for a few years when I was younger and quickly realized brake jobs were one of the easiest ways to make money.

I've heard those slide pins can get seized and be a complete PITA to get out.

I've never had Brembos before, so I'm new to it.

Maybe my acquaintance was being an over dramatic little girl about it ... he's known for that.

I am going to keep my EVO X for weekend car , loud , fast , uncomfortable but still it is an EVO not for Daily
I love both cars the R and the Evo X but lately I've been really like the rawness of the Evo X and how it's not being helped by electronics as much as the R and the big plus would def be the AWD.

I know a place in SoCal that doesn't have a markup when I got mine. I was able to get it with a ton of added accessories + DMV Fees etc. and that was it.
I appreciate the offer, but I've got my mind set on the Evo X now. I don't want to commit on purchasing a $40k car, the Evo used is going for around $26k which is a difference. Thank you so much for the offer though!

Always appreciate the input, but unfortunately I don’t have the time or the experience to be comfortable doing them myself right now; especially with the warranty issues I’ve already been through, I’m also going to bite the bullet and have the dealer do all work on the car until the warranty expires so that there’s no way they can argue that any repair work was mishandled at any point.

I showed my service rep the pricing points that were shared here and they actually ended up taking about $200 off the repair plus they gave me a rental car for free for the past 2 days while the parts were on order and installed, so all in all with tax out the door it was just over $800, my sanity is in tact (although I know some would argue the sanity of paying that), and Honda is still 100% responsible for every part and repair on the car thus far.

All things considered with all I’ve been through with the dealer I use, it’s hard to complain when I see how others are turned away and this dealership is still making attempts to make sure my ownership of the car is as smooth and easy as possible. They certainly don’t have to provide me with a vehicle while mine waits for brake pads to arrive lol.

Also, how many miles are on your car? Seems a little early to be needing pads unless you track frequently
13,800.

I drive the car very hard, because that’s what I bought it for; to have fun. Already replaced the front tires not too long ago also.

brakes are super easy. Brembos are cake vs the old style calipers.

- For a typical honda, Old style;
- losening/removal (2) 17mm torqued pretty high bolts. about 50 ft-lbs
- losening/removing (2) 14mm , lift up the caliper
- use one of those piston tools or the cube tool to push the pistons back in.
- replace new caliper, retorque everything.
= depending on experience, could take hours. more things to break. But, could be 1-2 hr job w/ a lift and power tools or if you're pro, less time.

- brembos - 2013 lexus GS
- 1 or 2 pins to hold the pads in place. Lexus is 1 pin, i believe fk8 is 2 pins.
- use a flat head screw driver or flat tool to leverage or push the piston back in
- put in new pads and replace retainer clips for the pin.
= about 30min - 1 hr for both sides. Hardest part is jacking up your car and removing the wheels.

I got about the same quote for lexus, i said see ya later and did it myself.

For what it's worth, i've never done a brake job for a type r, but the similarities are there.

I can tell you that the X has just as many electronic nannies as the Type R. S-AYC, AWD, torque vectoring, etc. Just like the Type R, you need to turn off the traction control if you really want to hoon it. I won't try to steer you away from an X, though. I love mine, even though it can be a pain in the ass sometimes. What year and trim level are you looking at?

I guess you're right, I didn't think about it like that. A pain in the ass how so? A lot of maintenance? Does it break down constantly?

I'm only looking at the 2014 GSR's. I like the little entertainment system compared to the previous years only having the radio and also because 2014 was the last year with the Recaros.

I used a shitty shop to upgrade cams and my turbo. They royally screwed it up. Then, the shop that fixed it, did it wrong, as well. The third shop has been better, but the engine builder we used screwed up the motor and it grenaded in under 1000 miles. We had to pursue legal action to get the money back. So, I've been without my X for too long. If you do anything to your X, just make sure you use a competent tuner. GSRs are less complicated since you won't have to tune the SST, but be prepared for t-case issues, as well. I doubt you'll have to worry about the ACD pump since you're in Cali, which is nice.

Honestly, before the first shop screwed everything up with my initial cams and turbo, and the resulting tune that made my car nearly unusable, the X was a pretty good car. The Type R is much more comfortable inside, but performance-wise feels very similar to my X when it was stock. The Recaros in the X are a bit more snug than the Type R seats, but I loved them. Do shifter bushings and any of the short shifter options on the X, too.

You can't go wrong between the two, in my opinion.
