You have to ask yourself if this is a 40k car. The answer is no.

With performance figures close to some Porsches, the real question is: "Is the Porsche a +$100k car?"
I mean I am not sure where you are going with this unless you are trying to say a Type R is as good as a Porsche. If that is where you are going with it I am going to have to ask you to let off the alcohol a little bit. haha Just because the Type R has a nice track time doesn't make it better than a Porsche. Hell 2018 Auto Mustang can beat 100K+ Porsches, but that doesn't make them better than a Porsche. A Porsche is on a whole different level than a Honda or Ford. Track numbers aren't everything. For those that think the Type R is better or even in the same league as a Porsche I encourage you to at least go look at one and if you are able drive one as they are two very different cars for many different reasons.

Back to the topic though as I have told many dealers who try to justify their markups I think the Type R MSRP is right on the money where it should be. I think it is a 36,000 car all day. Less than that is a steal and more than that there are other comparable options. Once you get to 40K or over that there are much better options out there in that range both new and used.

Do you own a CTR? If not you don’t have a legitimate basis for comparing it to these unidentified cars in the 40k “range”. I have owned a 911, now have a CTR and am astounded by it. I can’t think of anything that comes close for 40K and certainly not any “much better option”; there is none.

You are correct I don't have a CTR, so I guess I can't speak 100% here, but I am biassing my opinion off people who own/have owned a Type R and driven and/or owned other cars in the 40K range. I know many people who owned a Type R and I am sure you can't believe it, but they traded it for a Focus RS and say they don't regret or even look back on it. One person either on this thread a while back or another thread on this site traded their Type R for a Focus RS and said it was a great decsion. A focus RS with a MSRP of 42K+ can be picked up for 38K or less right now. Car and Driver whom has a great reputation in reviewing all kinds of cars picked the Type R over the RS by 1 pt, but said really they had a hard time deciding which is better.

Also congrats on owning a 911 and saying your Type R is better. That is the awesome thing about opinions in America is everybody is entitled to one and guess what they don't have to be the same. At the end of the day a Type R is still a Civic and still a Honda. To the enthusiast sure it is always something special. Now a Porsche is a Porsche at the end of the day and majority of people know and respect a Porsche. If asking the general public if they would take any Porsche even a base model or a Type R at the same offering price I think we can agree Porsche better get to building as they are going to fly off the lots while Honda won't have to increase production on the Type R very much if any. Heck they may see a drop in interest in the Type R under that situation. I think this thread speaks to the value of the Type R as most members are commenting they won't or at least don't feel like they will or should pay over MSRP. So I would say on this thread at least that the Type R is worth MSRP.

For 40K I would consider a New Focus RS, New Mustang GT, Used Tesla, Used GT350 yes a 2015-2016 can be obtained for low 40's now or maybe even a used Porsche. That or crap I could buy another Boss 302. Yes I said another as I just sold a 2013 Boss 302 so I am not foreign to performance cars, but you are still right I haven't driven a Type R so what do I know, but I have driven every other car I just listed except a Focus RS.

I think the Type R is indeed a special and yes even desirable car hence why I am still around and searching for one. Just I think it is worth between MSRP and maybe 2K above. Once you get over that 38K I have to consider other options and compare and unfortunately I wouldn't lean to the Type R once I look at the options at 38K and up price range. I am not a brand loyalist. I am sure to the Honda loyalist the Type R is worth every dollar they have to pay whether that is MSRP or 40-45K or more, but to the non Honda loyalist I think many have spoken they don't see themselves paying much over MSRP if any. Hence the thread title and why this particular thread was started...

Fair enough I look forward to driving one and really hope it stands up to the hype and I am not wasting my time looking/waiting for one...

No I am not joking. Like I said I am a rare car enthusiast bread it seems like these days as I don't have any brand loyalty. With that said have you driven a Tesla? If not go drive one and then lets talk... I have driven a Tesla Model S and a Tesla Model X with Ludicrous mode which has a 0-60 of 2.8. Talk about fast as hell holy crap!!

Y’all are really going at it, all I have to say is this is a great time to be a car enthusiast. I have a type R and traded my Camaro 1le for it. I miss my Camaro but that don’t mean the R is not good. Spend your money how you see fit. The Type R is really special and so was my SS 1le also i am sure there are many special cars out there so just enjoy them at the price you feel fair

I have to agree with @run42K, until you get some seat time driving this car you will never understand, I’ve had mine since Saturday and had to fly across the country to get it then drive it home, I now have over 1500 miles on the car in less than a week and all I can think about lately is driving this damn car! It truly is a “Game Changer”

Yeah I followed your process and glad you finally got a good deal on one. You were like me and others though before you got it wanting MSRP or close to it and ended up getting close to it with add ons you really valued for the mark up so basically MSRP. So I think you understand where I and many still looking come from.

I don't want to make it like we are going at it. I look at it more like we are expressing our opinions and that is what enthusiasts do right?

I do wish I could get some seat time, but it seems dealers are treating the Type R's like a exotic 100K car and no test drives allowed. Maybe if I can many others could get that seat time it would make us more ok paying some ADM as then we see first hand the value...

I confess I haven’t driven a Tesla but they don’t interest me given their price, their fuel source, the behavior of their CEO, their future prospects. So we won’t be talking Tesla.

Yeah I honestly agree the Tesla craze is not one I am all about. I have a friend that is all about Tesla hence the two I have driven have been his and his wife's cars. They are fast, but they are just that fast and not really fun to drive. Although used the prices aren't as bad as a Type R. Some can be found in the 30's and decent ones in the high 30's to mid 40's. So that is why I brought them up. Honestly the owners, CEO, or w/e don't really steer me to or away from a car. Heck dealership experiences I have don't steer me towards or away if it did I probably would by a Honda, Ford, or a couple other brands again and would be stuck buying a Mercedes again. Mercedes has some of the best dealer customer service I have ever seen, but I guess at the price for the car and the price of all service they better be. haha

Back to the Type R though I hope I get the chance to drive one so I can know if it is for me and worth the money. Only it seems short of all but signing purchase papers that isn't an option. I have been told I can drive once I am ready to sign. They said if I don't like it I don't have to buy it, but they are 99% sure if I drive it I will buy it. So when or I guess I should say if I find one within 1K of MSRP and that 1k is some valuable add ons I will drive and pull the trigger I hope. Until then I am shopping until I am ready to give up. I haven't lost hope as it seems many dealers are moving to MSRP or close to it. I now have had 5 dealers offer MSRP on their next in stock if I put a deposit down. Just can't get myself to do that not being able to drive it as putting down a 500-2000 deposit on a car I don't even know if I want as I haven't been able to drive just seems crazy...
