Hey everyone,
A little bit about myself, had a 2007 FA5 Si as my first car and had it for 7 years, loved the car but I was tired of having to rev the piss out of it for it to start moving and the rattles/build quality were driving me crazy.

Come 2016, the Mustang and Camaro caught my attention due to the raving reviews on how they have improved in the handling department and how they weren't just fat pigs with bid motors anymore. I drove both and decided to get a 6sp Camaro 2SS which had all the bells and whistles. Love the car, still do, but living in urban Orlando where traffic is everywhere I can never spread its legs as redlining in 2nd gear I am flirting with a free ride in the back of a cop car. Small errands are becoming a chore as it feels "big" driving around the populous areas of Orlando, I miss having the versatility of 4 doors so 2 months ago I started to look at getting a hot hatch.

At first I was dead set on getting a MK7.5 Golf R w/ DSG, between the radar cruise control and other safety features I thought it would make a great DD. There was one thing that bugged me about it, the looks. Going from a Camaro to a Golf R, I felt I was severely downgrading in the looks department but upgrading in everything else. I was also afraid that while the DSG is nice for DD, will I get the itch for a manual a few montsh down the road, urging me to trade in a 4 month old vehicle? After watching a few VS. videos the Type R grabbed my attention due to it still having a "wow" factor and a manual transmission where the clutch won't go out at 12K miles. I have already reached out to the closest 25 dealers near me, only 2 of which are willing to do MSRP but have no allocations ATM. The search is becoming tiresome but that is not the point of this thread.

My question for anyone who has either come from a muscle car or luxury car,
  • Are you happy with the build quality?
  • Are you satisfied with the decrease in power? (driving a slow car fast is more fun than fast car slow right? lol)
  • Is there any other car that is below $45k that you would recommend over the Type R as a daily driver?
  • Any pointers you wanna throw out there?
Thanks everyone!

Best thing to do is test drives and see how you like it.
What I would do to be able to test drive one lol. In Florida you’re more likely to be able to test drive a Ferrari than a Type R. Only time I’d be able to test drive is right before I signed the dotted line!

There are used ones for sale already. I'd see if you can hook up with one of those people and see what the car is like.

Might be able to save a couple dollars as well if you don't mind second hand.

Another option would be to go to a local meet and see if someone would be gracious enough to take you out for a ride and check their car out.

A few weeks ago, a member of this forum reached out to some Type R owners and asked a favor if he can check/inspect the car and do a ride along. I helped him on that as I showed him all that he needs to see. We also went on a 20 minute drive (I was driving of course!) just so that he can feel the suspension.

Maybe do the same thing here by reaching out to CTR owners in your area?

I went from a 2016 2ss to the type R , I was looking for a fun DD and whenever I think of a daily driver i think of reliable and fuel efficient and thats what the camaro lacked and I don't think neither the Focus RS or the Golf R are as reliable as a honda civic. Also You have to keep in mind value, This car will hold its value really well like any Honda performance car.

I was in the same boat as you 6 months ago. I sold my Hellcat and picked up the Type R. It’s obviously not nearly as fast but I’m having a ton of fun with the Type R. It’s a different kind of fast that’s way more agile and I’m not as worried about going sideways lol. Every once in a while, I miss the instant raw power of the Hellcat, but there’s no regrets.

I think this is what I am going to do. I’ll try to find some guys on here, I know there are a few here in Orlando. Actually had a dealer call me today, got a used one for sale for........$37k lol. Used ones are going for more than MSRP here unfortunately.

Hey it’s like I’m looking into the mirror of my future self lol. Would you say build quality is on par with the Type R? From my research it seams I’m going to have to tweak the audio system a little for it to sound good for one.

This is what I wanted to hear! Seams we are in the same boat (no pun intended)in regards to what we are missing out of the muscle cars (hellcat is a little faster in a straight line too lol). No complaints with the build quality of the Type R?

I kept my Hellcat and bought the type R as a daily summer driver. I enjoy both cars for different reasons. The power of the muscle car is hard to beat. That said the type R is no slouch. It will go to 100mph with little effort. The car feels solid and tight. Build quality is typical Honda (good). The car handles like a slot car, easy to drive, easy to park, and great around a corner. The ride quality is good for a trip down the Florida turnpike in any mode. Comfort mode is very soft, R mode is aggressive and stiff. Sport is in the middle. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with the R. Like has been mentioned before post up for a ride in one. Someone in your area will likely be happy to help you out.

Honestly I don't really mind the sound system but be ready to spend money on new wheels (18s preferably) , air intake , and exhaust. Those are the only 3 areas that once I upgrade I will be 100% happy with it. But make no mistake its a great car as is from the factory. I owned an 2015 camaro ss 1le and the 2016 like I said but being in the Type R even though not as powerful I feel like I am in something special, trust me you will love it.

I looked on Autotrader a few weeks back and around here used CTRs are still going for 10k+ over MSRP. I happened to see one Carmax the was priced close to MSRP but it didn't last long and I haven seen one on there since.

Wow. That's crazy. I didn't think a used one would sell for that much. Maybe I should sell and get that zl1 1le I'm craving

The build quality is good, the sound system is weak compared to the Hellcat, which had a very nice system
