NYT: More than 2 dozen people killed by carbon monoxide after leaving on their keyless cars

People have been poisoned by carbon monoxide due to leaving their car running from the "keyless" feature. I personally cannot say I have done this.

Anyone accidentally leaving their car running ? Seems pretty ridiculous.

Another reason to upgrade the exhaust system. These cars arw way too quiet

A member on here told me once that a friend of his left her civic running until lunchtime cause she forgot to turn it off when she went to work. True story.

I realized this may be a problem just today when I attempted to leave my rental Nissan Maxima running in the parking lot.

I did the same. This was several years ago and I left it in accessory mode somehow. It drained the battery. Newbie mistake.

You have to be a complete moron to leave the car running, especially when it beeps at you if you exit the car with the engine on.

They do beep and my OCD won't let me do anything like that. But a lot of those people are older, possibly not as good of hearing anymore, and more forgetful. So, --

-- could be your (grand)parents, you know. Heavens forbid.

Maybe they should make it an option where if you walk away with the fob, it would turn the car off and lock it after a minute or two. And have the salespeople explain it to the buyers...? (And be able to turn it off/on in the Settings) Extremely easy to implement, all the moving pieces are in place already -- could actually even be done on existing cars via a software update.

I feel bad for their families but these peeps were idiots.

For a while our garage door opener wasn’t working, so someone would have to get out and go unlock the front door and open the garage from the inside. This required that person taking my keyring with the front door key and the car remote (Mazda CX5) inside the house. The car would beep that the key was no longer in range, but the engine would stay on and I could drive the car into the garage.

Perhaps there needs to be a 5 minute timer where the engine would shut off if the car is in park and the key is not within proximity.

There were a handful of people here that did this, left it on all night, and discovered it in the morning.

I have no idea how people do this, but, amazingly it happens.

They do not, as it's a bigger safety hazard if they were to turn off in the middle of the road because you left your keys on the kitchen counter.

It'll stay on until the car is turned off, and it'll been annoyingly at you until it senses the key inside the car.
