So, got it installed last night. Before I get to the installation, some initial impressions.
Absolutely LOVE the sound my car makes now. From a volume standpoint it's only marginally louder, but everything sounds so much more defined and deep. And the turbo suction is very clear now. Throttle response SEEMS better, but it could be placebo.
As far as installation goes, this was a bit frustrating. I will say that the instructions are amazing for a first draft, but I think there's a lot missing, especially if a first-time car modder were to pick this up (which is important because that's one of 27won's objectives). Some feedback as far as things that need (IMO) to be iterated upon in the instructions:
  • As the poster stated above, there are clips missing from the diagram. We counted 19 in total clips removed. The 4 that are missing are all towards the front of the car
  • It isn't immediately clear that the 8 count of hex screws includes the 4 already mounted on the cover
  • It isn't immediately clear that the 2 count of flange nuts are the ones already attached to the rubber stand offs.
  • The instructions call for allen keys, but should really call for allen attachments to your torque wrench, as most of the torquing is done on allen bolts rather than traditional hex bolts.
  • The instructions (since they're digital) should include a link to a youtube video that demonstrates the best way to insert the CAI box. More on that below.
  • The instructions do not talk about air filter fitment until the page that shows how to remove and clean. This is an issue, because out of the box, the airfilter is not fitted tight to the airbox (easy for a first timer to miss).
Next, some general thoughts about the installation process as a whole:
  • The airbox was ridiculously difficult to get properly in to position without the short bracket getting in the way, or the side of the airbox's "tube" scraping on parts below. We had to go so far as to remove the short bracket from the box, get the box in position (which was still difficult), then very carefully put the short bracket on with very little clearance for our hands to thread the bolts in. My buddy and I kept commenting on how, if we saw someone put it in from the correct angle, we'd like have an easier time. Hence the suggestion for the video above. Unfortunately, the poor box has a ton of scratches on its outside now :(
  • We had to best guess the torque on the allen bolts, as we didn't anticipate needing the allen attachments for my torque wrench (parts only call for allen keys). We're both semi-experienced with cars, but we don't keep a ton of tools on hand because this is just a casual hobby.
  • The air filter loves to slip off the box inlet as you tighten, specifically the bottom part of the rubber. Be mindful of this; it will look fastened from above, but you need to feel inside the box's inlet to make sure the rubber hasn't separated from the inlet.
  • There is very, VERY little room to tighten the outer silicone fasteners, especially the turbo-side one (we had to rotate it so that the bolt faced the bottom of the car, and tighten from underneath the car).
  • I really think the lid needs redesigned. The instructions point out that the box will warp in such a way that the mounting holes won't line up with the lid's holes, and that you might have to squeeze or stretch the box to get it to line up; what it doesn't mention, is that it is ridiculously difficult to do so, because the box is now bolted in and really doesn't have any give. The lid made some awful noises on the last screw as it contorted.
  • I have some concerns about the box's L-shaped intake: it is currently pressing pretty hard against some type of wire with a blue connector.
In closing, the above is not meant as anything but constructive criticism: I love my new CAI, I really like 27won's approach to everything so far, and I want to see them succeed.
Excellent write-up! I'm adding my own feedback based on my experience installing this awesome intake.
I agree that the throttle response seems better, crisper.

"there are clips missing from the diagram. We counted 19 in total clips removed. The 4 that are missing are all towards the front of the car"
You can get away with removing the extra 4 and let the panel hang down. Reach around it from the front left edge to remove the lower airbox fasteners.
"The instructions do not talk about air filter fitment until the page that shows how to remove and clean. This is an issue, because out of the box, the airfilter is not fitted tight to the airbox (easy for a first timer to miss)."
This is true.

I did not experience this issue, I assembled as the instructions say and it went right in.
"The air filter loves to slip off the box inlet as you tighten, specifically the bottom part of the rubber"

That is true, the filter was giving me fits.
"I really think the lid needs redesigned. The instructions point out that the box will warp in such a way that the mounting holes won't line up"
I didn't have this issue.
I'm liking it, haven't been at freeway speeds yet. But I will this weekend on the way to Eibach.

A little tweaking of the instructions and it's golden.

I think I saw it mentioned in another post, did you leave off the short elbow bracket?

The piece for the harness? Yes, at first I left it on. Realized it was putting too much tension on the harness, so I removed it.

I had the 27won intake installed. I ran into all the similar issues when installing it. The main one was taking off the skid plate/shroud cover because there are more clips to remove. However, I just let it hang and removed the lower airbox assembly. The second big issue was tightening the air filter. Sometimes it would fall out if you are tightening it a lot. You really need to push it in properly to ensure a proper fit when tightening the clamps. The airbox wasn't hard to put in. The reason why it was hard to put in initially is because you need to remove the bolt attached to the rubber mounts lol. I forgot to do this. Overall, pretty happy. Drove it 100 miles yesterday, no problems whatsoever. Will continue to inspect the intake and its respective fasteners, nuts, to see if anything is loosening up! LOVE the sound but please add videos to the APP or make a video tutorial!

Excellent, thank you!
I'll say it again, your responsiveness in everything is fantastic genuinely appreciated. Keep up the great work!

EDIT: also I'm a little perplexed why I'm the only one in this thread that had a fitment issue. Is it possible the sport touring has extra wires in the way?

We did test fit on a sport touring (installed a local customers with CVT) and there where no extras wires or anything.

Interesting.
I'd love to see a top down view video of placing the box in, either by you or someone in the community. No idea why it was so difficult, but we were basically off by the whole space occupied by the short bracket (since we had to remove it first to get it to fit).

Anyway, thanks again for the follow-up!

It is my intention to create a video in the coming weeks.

Response to your feedback after meeting with my ENG team today.
  • As the poster stated above, there are clips missing from the diagram. We counted 19 in total clips removed. The 4 that are missing are all towards the front of the car (difference is in hatchback versus SI, instructions image was an FK7. Going to update the image in the instructions)
  • It isn't immediately clear that the 8 count of hex screws includes the 4 already mounted on the cover adding note in instructions
  • It isn't immediately clear that the 2 count of flange nuts are the ones already attached to the rubber stand offs. separating them in the builds process to make easier
  • The instructions call for allen keys, but should really call for allen attachments to your torque wrench, as most of the torquing is done on allen bolts rather than traditional hex bolts. changing text to make easier, simply need to be snug
  • The instructions (since they're digital) should include a link to a youtube video that demonstrates the best way to insert the CAI box. More on that below. even better will embed a video directly into the app
  • The instructions do not talk about air filter fitment until the page that shows how to remove and clean. This is an issue, because out of the box, the airfilter is not fitted tight to the airbox (easy for a first timer to miss). these are secured during builds, note to make sure attached is more robust in house.
