Tire recommendations for 18x8 Si wheel?

I finally decided to pull the trigger to upgrade my 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback (16” wheels - LX Trim) and bought a mint condition ‘17 Si Wheels (don’t judge; I still prefer the stock wheels over aftermarket, but I really don’t like the LX stock wheels).


I need some help though with the tires. Basically, I have a budget in mind and I really don’t want to spend any more than I have to, but at the same time, I want to make sure that I buy quality tires since that’s the only thing connecting my car to the road.


With that in mind, I’ve done my research and narrowed it down to a couple of tires. Since the Si Wheels are 18x8, I would like to ask some recommendations as to what set up to get:


1.) Nokian Zline A/S ------ 235/40/R18 (95W)

2.) Nokian Zline A/S ------ 225/40/R18 (92W)

3.) Nitto Neo Gen --------- 235/40ZR18XL (95W)

4.) Zeon RS3-G1 ------------235/40/R18XL (95W)


I know that that stock tires are 235/40/R18 so I’m thinking of keeping it that way, but with hours of research, some people still prefer to put in 225’s as the standard for 18” wheels. That basically means there’s not too much sidewall for the 225; hence your opinion.


Now, if you have any other tire recommendations, I’m all ears! I’ve seen people put in something like 245’s and lower it; not my thing, but any advice is highly appreciated!

235/40R18's will be the same circumference as stock. The difference between the Z and others is the Z's will get 20-25000 miles, while the others will get 40-65000. The Z's are obviously going to perform a LOT better on dry roads, and like shit in the winter.

I have been through multiple sets of the Nitto NeoGens and I would definitely recommend them. Great in the dry and rain. Don’t wear too fast and a good aggressive tread. I’d say stick to the 235/40 just so the speedometer isn’t off and for the stock look. Also more tread on the ground for better traction.

Thanks for the response! how did you come up with the zlines being 20-25000 miles? I really couldn't find too much detail in terms of the life of these tires; speaking more towards the zline a/s.

I've seen a couple of reviews and they're basically saying how these tires are a new model from Nokian (which are mainly known for their winter tires) but actually matches the continental DWS, which is said to have good performance,, thread count but horrible road noise.


as for the price, Nokian's All Season tires are a no-brainer; just thinking about the overall value of it.

I drive pretty much around 60miles on the weekdays towards work so I'm looking for a tire the has good mileage, good performance, little road noise and a competitive price. The Nokian A/S pretty much covers all these except for the mileage part (based of you saying it's between 20000-250000); but I guess you really can't have everything for that price point.

Yeah, I've heard a lot of people here get the Nitto NeoGens and have overall been happy about it. They're a sister company of TOYO so I'm honestly not that surprised at all.

Comparing these to the Nokian Zline A/S, it's really hard not to think about the price point. one person said that the Nokian tires will only last about 25,000 miles (not sure if this is combined city/highway) while the Neo Gens is close double of that, but at $81 compared to $125 is a massive difference in price.

the all season Nokian tires have all 5 star reviews from different websites and forums, but it doesn't even compare to the massive good reviews on the Neo Gens.

man! this is a tough one!

I'll probably stick with the 235/40 then.

When I stated Z, I was talking about the tire rating, not the Zline brand. Looking into those Nokians, I can tell you just by looking at the tread pattern that they're going to be noisy. The pattern is too consistent across the tire to dampen round noise, and instead will resonate, increasing road noise.

One other thing I noticed, the Nokians didn't have a manufacturer tread life warranty listed anywhere. You're gonna get what you pay for with cheapo tires.

Of that list, definitely go with the Nitto's, tho I can guarantee those will give you up to 25000mi. They're relatively cheap, ride smooth and quiet, and handles very well in dry and well enough in wet. My buddy gets those on all his cars because they're in that sweet spot of price/performance/with low noise.

I read the patent on that rubber technology. Not sure I believe it.

A straight line across the tread means it's hitting the road at the same time. The inside and outside tread on the Nokians are fairly straight and uniform, this is what generates road noise. On the Nitto's, notice the wave and angular pattern, as well as the variance of the tread on the edges across the tire.

Some of the most quiet tires I've driven on were Michelin Pilot Sports, but they're fairly expensive. Notice the smaller gaps between the tread, and how each section of tread is angled and slightly offset from the others? These tires also last 65,000, which is nice for a Y rated tire. I will say the Nokians have channels, which are good for driving in the rain, much like the Michelins.

Ultimately, you're looking at $80 tires, so just remember sometimes you get what you pay for.

The Zline A/S is rated for 50000 miles. The picture above is the Zline summer tire and also has a different tread pattern. In Canada, Nokian is very common and highly regarded for their winter tires. They make one of if not the best winter available.

Considering the price of these, it would be hard to go wrong if on a budget.

Just realized that! while the Nokian brand is no doubt one of the best brands in Europe for it's winter tires, they basically just entered into a new market in terms of their summer and all season tires just about a year ago or two.

It's challenging to choose this over the competition since there's really not a lot of people that has tried these yet; however, these are still very competitive in pricing and that's something I can't just overlook.


***I also live here in northern California, so it's mostly sunny and a little bit of rain now around this season. I also failed to mention in my post that I travel about 50-60miles a day, so if the Zline A/S are rated for 50,000 then that just puts it back in the competition.

Definitely don't get a ZR tire if you drive distances. An A/S 50K tire is solid for that. But a few extra skril for a known tire that can do 65k (not necessarily the Michelin), I would suggest that. I'd need to redo my research for a specific suggestion, but there are plenty of options for an A/S tire in the $100-130 range that are all of known quality.
