I'll be visiting the land of the rising sun in a couple of months. I was just wondering, given the large number of Type R (and Honda) fans in this forum who have probably been to Japan (or are living there), if there are some must-see attractions for Honda fanatics (Honda museum, Honda headquarters, etc). To keep things simple, we'll be staying 6 nights in Tokyo and 6 nights in Kyoto, with side day trips to nearby areas if necessary. Thanks!

Just walk into any Honda dealer and it's an attraction. Actually I recommend walking into every car manufacturer dealer you can, they usually always have something special and have accessories we dont get here. Then the obvious Super Autobacs and swing by Up Garage, they might have super cheap CTR parts.

It's been a while since I lived there but I believe downtown Tokyo has the Honda welcome plaza....Have fun!

I heard that the Honda Collection Hall is pretty cool but I believe it’s like 90 minutes north of Tokyo. https://www.honda.com/collection-hall-gallery
I went to Japan last year and visited the Honda Collection Hall, which happened to be right beside the Twin Ring Motegi Circuit!

Are you driving or taking transit? If by transit, be sure to plan well ahead as it's quite difficult to reach there from Tokyo. If you visit from Tokyo via Utsunomiya, the main issue is that the bus service is very infrequent between the bullet train station and the track/collection hall. I mean there's only one bus that goes there in the morning, and then a bus that comes back in the afternoon. And the service isn't available every single day.

Try and hit up UpGarage if you get a chance. I went there every weekend and would buy tons of rims for 50 bucks, clean them up and sell them for 500 plus back in the states, lol.

I will put in a vote for the Honda Collection Hall at Twin Ring Motegi. It's worth allocating at least half day in the hall because there is so much stuff to look at. I took a train ride, transferred to a much smaller local train, then took a taxi to the track. Well worth it if you are a Honda fan or a car fan.

Thanks guys, will be arriving in Japan this Sunday. 6 nights in Tokyo and 6 nights in Kyoto. Not really interested in the tuner shops since time is limited and the lady is gonna freak out haha.

The Honda Collection Hall and the Honda Welcome Plaza are possibilities though. Honda Welcome Plaza for sure since it's inside Tokyo. Is this like a sales showroom where it would be awkward to walk in and look around, or is the place meant for visiting? Is the Honda Collection Hall the most popular tourist site in Japan for Honda fans? 3+ hours one way via train means this would be a full day trip, so not sure this will be likely, but will try. Are taxis readily available after getting off at Motegi?

Any other must see sites for Honda freaks? Other Honda museums? Thanks!

This may not be the answer you are hoping or looking for but IMO, don't waste any time on any honda things while in Japan, especially if you will be with your SO. There is so much to do and you only have 6 days in Tokyo. Japan is bigger than honda, life is more than honda.

I lived in Japan for 3 years and didn't get to see and experience all I wanted to. Don't waste any time chasing honda especially in such a short time. There is so much else to see and experience. Here are just a few things in tokyo:

-tokyo sky tree
-tokyo tower
-asakusa
-odaiba (big gundam, huge mall and shopping district)
-tokyo Disney
-ueno park
-tsukuji fish market
-shinjuku and Tokyo stations
-shibuya
-yokohama
-enoshima
-mt Fuji
-ryokan at mt Fuji
-odaiba Olsen

I can go on and on, you see my point? Each of those you can spend at least half a day on, if not multiple days. And that's just the tip of the ice burg. Each station at tokyo is like a micro neighborhood with it's own culture and feeling. I didn't even mention any of the awesome food places yet. You can spend like 2 weeks just going from restaurant to restaurant eating all day everyday and you won't be able to experience it all.

DO NOT waste any time chasing honda stuff. Just my $0.02.

You are right, it's a long way to travel and very much off the beaten path. It's a real museum and not a sales environment, so it's totally meant for visitors to walk around. There is also a display of Asimo robots. I went on a weekday in the middle of the day and it's pretty deserted. I'm guessing the main action is during race events on weekends. During the deserted time that I went, there was one lone taxi at the train station when we got off and so we just got in and went. Not a lot of customers looking for rides at that time.

You guys are right, and thanks for that list! Though depending on where we're going and what we're seeing in Tokyo, the Honda Welcome Plaza might be an option and something along the way, we'll see. The Collection Hall might be too much, you're right. We're staying at a hotel in Shinjuku (which btw, I've heard is one of the best areas to stay). If you know of any nice places to dine (including sushi places), would appreciate it. I've heard of sukiyabashi jiro sushi restaurant, have you heard of this one? One other thing, my partner has celiac disease, in other words needs to eat only gluten-free. Haha yes, we've picked the worst area of the world to eat gluten-free as Asian food is loaded up with wheat, soy sauce, etc. You know of any places that might accommodate modified meals (taking out certain ingredients, etc)? Might check out some Western-ized restaurants as well, might have better luck. Thanks!

How about the Honda Welcome Plaza? Is that one meant for visiting and looking around as well?

If you are willing to spend the $$, I know there are many Michelin starred restaurants that, I'm willing to guess, would cater to gluten-free.

There are also hundreds of awesome cafes, micro breweries, and special themed restaurants.
