Up here the minimum cost for this type of service or packages is $250.

IMO it's not worth it and TBH I doubt they actually take the time to inspect the list. Even though I DIY I never bothered with this type of service. I owned 5 vehicles and *knockonwood I've never had any issues.

If you really want to get it done shop around.

yeah i doubt i’m gonna do it soon. i’m still at 80% maintenance life left. I currently have 46.6k miles and definitely need new tires ASAP but my brake pads are at 50% life left according to honda techs. I doubt my fluid could be that burnt. Anyhow thanks for the info

You don’t replace brake fluid cause it’s burnt. You replace it cause over time brake fluid tends to collect a lot of moisture and water, thus causing lines to rust. Just do it yourself, 7 bucks for dot 3 32 oz bottle at Walmart and another person is all you need.

.. not just to rust, it causes break fluid to boil (water in it vaporizing in hard breaking conditions ) , which is much more dangerous

My wife's last car sold in 2016 with 15 years and 80,000 miles , work fine

Well it’s like motor oil, sure you can drive 80,000 miles without an oil change. You won’t notice anything until your engine messes up and your car stops running then it’ll be too late to do anything about it.

Engine Oil is another story , I use top grade =

No it is not like engine / motor oil, this is where you may make a mistake.
Other oil don't work hard and never come dirty like engine oil.

I always put high quality synthetic engine oil in my cars.
And keep my cars more than 10 years with lots of mileage and many cars, I' am old .

Dealers need to see you to make money and keep them in business. It's up to you.

I also have this maintenance minder coming up in 3 to 4 months. I'm reluctant to have to pay $250 to have the car "inspected" and the fluid changed for that that price especially as my lease will be done at the end of the year.

Wonder if all the service minders have to be completed before returning the lease... I think I may have that one done at a local mechanic for $50 to $70 and ask them to look over all the B7 minder components while at it... and make sure I get a receipt. $250 for a 10 minute job and looking around under the car is ridiculous.

I'll put this out there.

It's not best to suggest/indicate to someone not to change their brake fluid based on your own experience as their driving conditions/habits may be different than yours. Especially on a different vehicle.

Additionally, depending on how contaminated the brake fluid gets with moisture based on the design of the vehicle's braking system, will determine how soon/how often it needs changed.

Your car will tend to not stop as well with older fluid because the contaminates are more easily compressed than brake fluid, which increases stopping distances.

If Honda suggests it to be changed, my recommendation would be to change it. However, I'm sure it's not a life/death situation if you decide to wait a few more thousand miles.

Edit: You can purchase brake fluid testing strips to determine how bad the fluid is. If it tests fine, then I'd probably wait.

If you write to me , I just say what I do not what you should do . And this opinion is not only from me.
It's also to give another opinion than Honda say.
About brake fluid; I never, never see I have less brake.

Honda dealer make money with service not with car's sale.

If you think the Civic 10th generation are more fragile , less reliable than the other car I had , it is another story . I don't think so .

No need to by facetious.

I'm not saying the 10th gen civic's are more/less reliable than any other car. I'm just stating that it's a different platform, different tech/maint. requirements, so to base it off a different vehicle & your personal experience is a bad platform.

Circling back to my original comment, is about following what Honda recommends - it's not a life or death situation if he decides to wait - and I recommended that he test the fluid to confirm based on his driving habits and conditions.

I highly doubt Honda put the recommendation in there only for their benefit. Plus, he could change it himself.. and Honda gain's nothing.

This maintenance schedule is nothing new.

Honda ( or other cars builder ) recommend same maintenance on their 9th , 8th , 7 th ....generation.

Nothing to do with " a different platform".
