I may also get some plastic to block some of the new vent out so you're unable to see the rear bumper support.
I believe the bumper bar is black so you should be good.

What would these rear faux vents look like colour matched ? Too weird?
I wouldn’t recommend doing this because it wouldn’t match the front vents.

Ha! Originally I thought you meant after the conversion. IMO just painting faux vent would look weird. Some people dislike all the black on the bumper. Doing conversion there’s opportunity to reduce black. Cutting out entire vent hole and re-spray the trim color of car. But then I would paint vent trim in front to have unified look.

I wonder what it would look like color matched on the outside trim but keeping the inside mesh black. I think it would do a good job of making the vents appear smaller but still looking factory.

I totally agree and something I was strongly considering. I think either black or color match trim and keep mesh black are best options.
