I think you need to put it in neutral, press in the clutch, hold for second, then back out. Then shift in reverse as normal...
Or:
Clutch in,
Shift into neutral,
Stop,
Shift into Reverse,
Clutch out.

(switched the steps for clutch-in and neutral shift)

Yeah believe it or not I have tried almost all these things all ready...and I am the old guy with gray hair (only some) that has been driving a stick forever. :( I talked with Honda about the car today...this is all new to them and they seemed kinda concerned when I picked up my plates. But they need the car for at least an entire day. So I'll need to wait a couple days to get it in. But on the positive side, if I release the clutch even slower than I have been (which is ridiculously slow already) I can catch the car not moving and the shifter just starting to vibrate before the grind. Then I repeat all the steps people have been suggesting above all over again until it catches. Or...it slams into gear and I have a mild heart attack about my brand new car trying to kill itself.

FWIW, I have owned numerous manual transmission Honda's since the mid 90's and reverse has been a problem on almost all. When reverse is giving me fits then I put it in first roll forward just a half a foot or so, stop, and then put it in reverse. Works almost every time with a clean engagement into reverse.

I've actually tried that as well. The real problem I have with all this is that the transmission gives no feedback that it may not be in gear. I feel the reverse lockout as I pass between 5th and 6th gears from a full stop. Flip into reverse and it goes straight back with zero resistance. I've had cars that you could actually feel the gear almost engage but not fully. Then it was easy to know to try again. With this one it just jumps right to grinding or slamming into gear. I have a very small almost nonexistant window of where I can actually see the shifter start to vibrate before the grind.

I'll just have to wait and see what the dealer says.

Not really. I dropped the car off last week but they didn't have time to really get to it before I needed it back. So I am just waiting on the day my wife works from home again to drop it off.

So big thanks to everyone who made some suggestions. I actually just got back from the dealer after they had the car for 2 days. They were able to duplicate every problem I had (thankfully - but not surprising). In short, tech said it may need an entire new transmission, but they are unsure of the exact problem. But they need the car for over a week to follow what Honda Tech Line says to start replacing everything as they take it all apart. FUN So once they have a loaner car available I'll be dropping mine off to get looked at. Then I'll start asking more questions about what the exact problem is.

But they all said this is not normal. They even let me take out one of their other Si's on the lot to confirm what it SHOULD feel like. My car was totally different. So we'll see...

OK...so after Honda had my car for almost 2 weeks dealing with this I finally got it back. When I went to pick the car they filled me on what the issue was.

So after Honda had the tech remove and disassemble the entire transmission, take pictures, send those to them, then got walked through checking over everything with a fine toothed comb, they said to replace the reverse assemble and "see what happens when the customer drives it." Luckily the tech noticed something missing upon reassembly. There is a small spring and ball (similar to the spring in a mechanical pencil) that works with the reverse assemble, that was missing/damaged. Tech said it looked like what was supposed to be holding it in place broke. Not totally sure if these parts are internal or external to the tranny but if it was internal I'm hoping/glad there was no other problems caused as these fell/worked their way through the gearing to the bottom of the housing. But the car drives totally differently. I'm getting better gas mileage now as it dropped off drastically after this problem (tech said the fluid was darker than it should have been too). So...long story short, I'll be keeping an eye on the tranny for any other symptoms from fluid burning up quicker than it should.

So 2 weeks, and over $2k worth of work done, a $150 part was the issue. Glad it was still under warranty.

This is what warranties are for. Good job with staying on top of them.
