Hi guys,

I recently experienced a problem with my CTR's brakes screeching extremely loud while going in reverse or while the front wheels were fully rotated one direction. The sound was quiet when it first started happening, as if I was running over an aluminum can. Over the course of the week it got progressively louder, to the point where I took the car into the dealer for them to check it out.

The tech (who was extremely nice and helpful) said he noticed right away that "the cover that sits directly behind the front brake rotor had been deformed." He said he didn't see any scuff or scratch marks indicating that it may have been hit by something, so he assumed it may have just bent from extreme heat.

I haven't taken the CTR to the track or driven it hard, but I do live in Orlando, and it is still fairly hot for this time of year, getting to 93-96 deg. on an average day.

As a fix, all he did was take a pair of pliers and bend the cover back in place. Simple enough, but I'm skeptical it will solve the issue permanently. I've had this issue with both front brake sets.

I wasn't sure if any other Civics were experiencing this problem, but for those who were, I wanted to document my experience. This may be related to the issue found here (http://www.civicx.com/threads/loud-metal-screeching-sound.3100/)

Thanks,

Tyler

Even in daily driving, the covers get some small rocks, just make sure to not bend them too much to not stress (they get rusty with time) & break where they are attached to, I did this fix once in another car, ended up breaking a bit the cover.

Get used to the screeching
Yup. Mine does the same thing from time to time when coming to stops. The Brembos seem to love doing it in parking garages for all to hear...

Hey,

Just picked up my Type R a month ago and the squeeling started once the temp dropped to the 50s. The only thing I don’t understand is the screeching sound I get when I first start reversing. It didn’t happen when it was warm but for the sound to happen when I’m not applying brakes is a little unsettling. Does anyone have any insight into the screeching in reverse?

Thanks

If your screeching sounds almost like you're scraping an aluminum can on your brakes, take it into Honda and tell them your brake heat shield/brake cover is rubbing against the rotor and causing a loud noise. The tech should be able to bang it back into place. It's happened to my Type R 3 times now.

Dang, what is causing it to bend to begin with?

When I took mine in, the tech said that it looks like the heat shield had small dents in it from rocks and debris that had gotten kicked up from the road. He said it's also a possibility that it got so hot that the shield warped into the rotor, or even a combination of both.

Did they replace the part or call it wear?

try taking off the wheel and checking yourself. When I had a loud screeching noise, it turned out a rock got wedged in btwn the dust shield and the rotor.

Unless your car has seen heavy track use I can't imagine it would get that hot. That's kinda the point of the huge brakes... so they don't over heat. Hopefully it won't be a long term issue for you.

Neither, the tech bent the shield back into place. Since it's already happened a couple of times they said they would replace the shields the next time I come in with the issue haha.
