Hyundai seems to have bang-for-buck down really well. The biggest upsides to the Civic for me were the better drive and the well thought out interior.

Call me crazy, but I like the Civic's CVT more than the traditional auto in the Elantra.

I'm with you....it took me a couple months, but I am really getting used to the CVT....Honda did a really good job with this version...merging on highways is still a bit louder than I'd like, but around town loving it.

Several of my friends drive Hyundais and they love them. Hyundai's warranty also beats Honda's. So if something does go wrong you have longer coverage. I see tons of Hyundais on the road around my area. I went and drove the new Elantra for a second time yesterday. This time they left me on my own for a "take it out for as long as you want" test drive. (The other dealer basically just had me go around the block on city streets with the salesman) So I had a chance to take it on the highway and then sit and get to know the electronics better. I was very impressed in the end. And the fact that this dealer is apparently willing to sell me a fully loaded Elantra for somewhere under $25k means I am pretty much sold as I think it's an excellent value.
Did you bought it in the end?

It's a personal preference, Japanese trumps Korean automakers - especially when I plan to keep the vehicle for a longer period of time. Even though it's bigger bang for the buck and some nice looking designs, I never considered a Hyundai or a Kia.

Yes, I did. They managed to locate one in the color I wanted so I bought one...Elantra Limited with the ultimate package. I've had it for about 10 days now. Android Auto is a little disappointing but hopefully it will be continuously improved.

You might see alot of new Hyundais on the road but where are all the one ones from years past? I never see old sonatas ,elantras none even the old Santa Fe or Tucson.. there in the graveyard....

Well for 1 they weren't as large a seller in the US. I had a 2001 Elantra and having come off just being able to buy whatever little part I needed off eBay for my previous corollas and civics it was a stoke how much more work it was to find parts just because they weren't as common.

And 2. No one is contending that older Hyundais were winning on the reliability front but current ones come with a 5 year /100k mile warranty.

I know people tend to hold onto cars for a while but after 5 years personally I'd be looking to see what else is out there anyway.

Actually guys...

I run an Elantra site (elantraclub.com) and we have many members with near to or over 200,000 miles on their cars. People tend to remember the crap Hyundai put out 20 years ago. It's not the same animal these days. And the 10 year 100,000 mile drivetrain warranty is pretty good.

I remember back in the late 70's when I was reluctant to buy Japanese cars. Then I bought a CRX, Integra and Civic. ;)

Kia and Hyundai are actually pretty solid, reliable cars overall.

The new Civic has definitely set the bar high for the competition.

What sold me on the 2016 Civic over all other compacts (including Elantra) is the European styling, both inside an out. Honda was influenced by Audi A3 and it just looks and feels more premium than anything in its class (the higher end models especially Touring). Not to mention better HP and Mileage, resale value.

The lack of power in the engine prevented me from even going to a Hyundai/Kia showroom. I have a friend that had a Kia Optima, and the only thing that I was left with as an impression is just how much it struggled to maintain highway speed.

I am sure the Koreans make fine cars, but for now, I am sticking to Japanese makes.

Turbo engine coming later.
Will be curious to see how that rates.

That was the biggest factor for me. The Civic has a much better drive without sacrificing mileage.

I don't really notice any sort of lack of power. Drive one yourself before you say it isn't powerful enough.

I drove them back to back. The Elantra is perfectly adequate for a daily driver, but the power difference is totally noticeable. It's just a factor of how much it would matter to you. I came off a 2002 Accent that felt like it was being pushed too hard at 75mph. The extra power in the Civic made me feel like I was spoiling myself.
