Yo Guys! New Civic X. I'm expecting delivery of my Blue CTR by the 27th. Im pretty damn excited!! I was wondering how everyone getting one is planning to break in their Type R's? I'm from the old school of breaking in a vehicle is taking it easy and not going over 4k on rpms until after the first 1k miles.. I've also been told be some to stay under 4 k rpms until after 3 k miles.. Anyone knows proper breaking in procedures? Thanks for any feed back guys and gals!

Honestly dude.... you need to bring in by my place for a week or so. I'll take good care of it. Just Kidding. Sounds like you've got the handle on it. Be sure to tell it good night and tuck it in.....at least that's what I'm doing.

PDI drive. 5K rpm. But it doesn't look like they are abusing the car.

They don't have any more CTR. If someone was wondering.

Vacuum pulls to seat the rings, varied driving for 500-1000 miles to break in the clutch

or ...

Break it in on a dyno

I'm not kidding or trolling
Cool! I was going to do the varied driving when I go on my first road trip for 4th of July. Thanks for the input.

Guide and manual says 600 miles for engine break in and 200 miles for brake break in so basically no aggressive driving or stopping within those mileages.

BUT then there is the Motoman method: drive it like you stole it from day one.

Up to you but I'm going to follow Honda's method.

I can tell you from experience taking apart many a motor that it doesn't really seem to make any difference. I've seen the insides of cylinder walls on cars that I know never got broke in with 150,000 miles and still have the crosshatch in the cylinder walls. Just follow hondas procedure which is no WOT pulls and varied rpm and no sudden acceleration. I don't believe they specify on what rpm you should stay under, someone post a link if I am wrong.

I can't send the PDF (though the US version is definitely downloadable on line somewhere), but if you just want to know about the break-in you don't need the whole thing anyway - this is word for word what it says (on the "Precautions while driving" page in the owner's manual):

During the first 600 miles (1,000 km) of operation, avoid sudden acceleration or full throttle operation so as not to damage the engine or powertrain.
Avoid hard braking for the first 200 miles (300 km). You should also follow this when the brake pads are replaced.

Yes, I thought you were down under as I was assuming Qld was Queensland, mainly from seeing the words Holden and ute in your car list! You'll love the CTR when it gets there.

Not sure what you mean about doing engine breaking though - do you mean can you use the engine to slow down? If so then yes you can do that in the same way you would in other manual (stick shift) cars. If you meant something else, please explain and I'll answer if I can.

I suspect it may be confusing for some people around the world with the thread being about "break in" procedures, which is what we would here usually call "running in", i.e. how to treat the engine, brakes etc when the car is new to bed everything in properly before you start driving it hard. "Breaking" something here in the UK usually means dismantling it to use for spare parts!

If you are really serious about your Type R getting the proper "break-in", the first thing you need to do is making sure your type R never leaves the dealer's parking lot until you pick up your car. I was at a dealer when a new Type R arrived at the dealer on a truck. I was going to buy it so my sales guy allowed me to watch the initial preparation process. One of the preparation "boys" drove the car to fill up the gas tank. I followed behind quietly with my Acura without him noticing me. After he was a block away from the dealer he floored the Type R and smoked the tires multiple times on the way to the gas station. I was like.... WHAT THE F***!!! and I didn't buy that car.

I would recommend you tell your sales person that you want a guarantee that your Type R do NOT leave the dealer parking lot upon arrival, and you will fill up the gas tank on your own.
