I'm conflicted. I have a free oil change until 100k miles per 5k interval and I've noticed that at 5k intervals my oil level would still be at 60%. Should I wait until its about 20% and change or should I just follow the intervals? My last oil change was at 15k miles and now I'm at 19k miles and its still 60%. Mind you, I do 90% highway / 10% city driving.

You mean you have free oil changes (not just "a" free oil change)? In that case, take advantage of it and have it replaced at 5k intervals for better protection and cleanliness of your engine and turbo internals in that horrid Atlanta heat!

Yeah so apparently I bought a package that gets me free oil changes all the way until 100k miles & $100 deductible for every repair; along with the GAP & extended warranty.

Thanks for the input! And Atlanta hasn't been so bad this week, lol.

Hmm...I'll have to look and see if mine has that. Personally, I've always done my own oil changes (bad experience with my dad's car years ago, after he bought one of those 'lifetime oil changes' things from Sears Automotive, back in the day). The one thing I hated about changing oil in my '15 Si was the oil filter is mounted vertically, rather than horizontally or at an angle - no matter what...as soon as you loosen it...oil poured down the filter and all over your hand. Haven't crawled under the '17 to see how it's mounted, but my guess is...same way...

If it's the same as the EX-T, then absolutely. That describes it exactly.

My wife has a Subaru Crosstrek, and they mount it vertically, but on the top (i.e. access it by popping the hood). Much less messy.

Hey guys, I own my civic since Sep 2016, bought it with 5 miles and 100% oil life (obviously), almost 1 year later I drove 3400 miles and oil life at 65% .... should I still change it or just wait until it shows 0?

Change it asap... It should be changed at least once a year as recommended by Honda.

Have you read you UOA? Your fuel dilution is at a highly excessive SEVERE LEVEL... How many miles were on that oil change sample?
We're getting a lot of the same readings back across the board. High fuel dilution in both the 1.5T and the Accord's 2.4 DI. I have to think Honda is aware of it. But I think it's concerning enough to warrant a high stability synthetic and/or shorter OCI's as a precaution. :dunno:

There's also speculation in this thread that it could be due to testing methodology:

Obviously I have since I posted it. And dilution is not surprising me

Have you read my post? How many miles were on that oil change sample, and what is your total mileage? Your Kinematic Viscosity @ 100ºC is down from 8.7 to 6.8 cSt.

IT doesn't matter, the semi-synthetics aren't even holding up for 5k OCIs so if you want more protection and less trips to the dealer, buy some high stable (low NOACK) and good add pack (extended OCIs) full synthetic oil + filter which is what I am contemplating. Screw the free oil changes if they don't last or are not robust enough to begin with.

Edit: I still might extend the break-in somehow with Honda Bulk 0w-20 or a similar formula but at the point, might as well go free oil.

Guys, I just got back from the dealer and changed oil at 5801 miles! With BULK Honda oil (although it says full syn on the paperwork but I'm skeptical) I wanted to EXTEND the Break-in. Now if I had went with the Honda Maintenance Minder, I would have had to change it at like 3500-4000 miles. I am speculating cause I reset it by mistake a few times learning the ropes. I also rotated tires. This is at almost 6000 miles and I live in a notorious HOT SEVERE climate. The reason my minder went quickly was I do a lot of idling with A/C. I figured it is using that stat strongly and I wanted to leave the FF in a bit longer then I did the 06 Accord which I did a little past 5k. This time, I went almost 800 miles more just so I can avoid whatever happens when you change the oil too quick. Scoring on valves? Oil Burner. Who knows but I got it right and the car is running great.
