Dave's times at Cayuga:
Golf R (DSG): 1:25.97
STI: 1:25.39
RS: 1:22.81
CTR 1:22.45
(These are all Canadian-spec cars, eh.)
Those times say a lot for the Honda. Being lower cost (at least MSRP) and only FWD, it's surprising to me its time beat out all the others.

Great comparison in that Autoguide review - more useful for what it says about its competitors than the CTR itself. Consensus from all four journos: the CTR is the best overall.

LOTD: "Aesthetically speaking the CTR borders on offensive".

If you watch the video they go out of their way to note that the professional driver had an issue with the Golf R brakes and it cost the car a lot of time. I kind of thought the Golf R time was slow seeing it was a DSG model but I've not heard of these cars having brake issues before so I'm not sure what happened there. Still doubt even with good brakes that the Golf R's time would have eclipsed the Type R's.

Dave's times at Cayuga | Colin's times (I don't know Colin)
Golf R (DSG): 1:25.97 | 1:24.56
STI: 1:25.39 | 1:25.65
RS: 1:22.81 | 1:23.00
CTR 1:22.45 | 1:23.76
Note Dave has been racing Honda's for years.

Also, here's a review just released by Alex on Autos. I like his methodical somewhat-long-winded reviews; they're aimed at 'normal' people - not racers, LOL.

Yet another comparison with Golf R/STI, but no FoRS, but with video footage from my local track, Calabogie, and two well-respected (in Canada) automotive journalists.

"If you just want to go fast on the track, you buy the Civic Type R; if you want to have fun on the track, maybe you buy the WRX STI; and if you're never going on the track, but you want to go fast on the street, it's the Golf R."

Not to take anything away from the RS, but I believe the RS was on Cup 2s for those timed laps.

Possible, but unlikely. Cup2's are not an option in Canada; the FoRS only comes Pilot Super Sports and Pilot Alpin PA4's (Yes, you can only buy the FoRS in Canada with two sets of rims/tires ...)

If you pause the video at 0:59 to the 1:00 mark, you can clearly see the tread pattern of the Focus RS tire.

Based on what I can see, the tread pattern is much closer to the Sport Cup 2 tires. Perhaps they were able to get a Focus RS with those tires from Ford?

Super sport, notice how the first groove is very close to the horizontal slots:

Sport Cup 2 (notice how the first vertical groove is further away from the horizontal slots, like the one shown in the video):

Good eye! Cup2's were optional on the RS in Canada last year IIRC, but still ... not quite to the level of putting Cup2's on for a Nurburgring lap ... o_O.

Haha thanks! I know what you mean about putting Cup 2's for setting a ring record...but that's what others are doing too. It's just to make things more fair IMO.

Companies like Porsche, BMW, McLaren, GM, etc, they even develop special tires for their performance cars.

Actually when I was looking seriously at the RS last year Sport Cups were the only summer tire available on the Canadian car (winter Alpins were also included). I believe that is still the case.
