I test drove a 2017 Elantra Limited and a 2016 Civic EX-T back to back today. The Elantra had nice blind spot monitoring and a leather interior. Somehow, I prefer the Civic's cloth interior. The Civic's steering wheel actually feels better to me than the Elantra's leather one. The Elantra had numb steering, but adequate acceleration and a quieter & more comfortable ride than the Civic. The Civic had MUCH better steering and picked up speed much more easily. The Civic has a nice spot for your phone to sit whereas the Elantra couldn't fit my iPhone 6S Plus in its tray. I had to shut the little tray door against the cable and put my phone on top of it.

As odd as it sounds, one of the Civic's killer features is its center arm rest. It's high up, slides, and holds a ton of stuff. It was actually a big factor in me deciding I want to buy a Civic when they get a Rallye Red model in.
I felt like the large center console was a big winner for me as well. I am always worried my cars will get broken into, and that center console is extremely good for hiding things that look like they might be worth something, or hold cash. (I keep a little coin purse for meters in the car, the tray that doesn't slide out is a perfect fit for this). It also fits a kleenex box (which I desperately need come allergy season), a few random other items, and I still do not need to remove the cup holder.

I will say though, the cup holder is always in a weird position - if I have a straw in a fast food cup it is difficult to find a comfortable position for my elbow.

I plan to drive them both soon. And (heaven help me) the new Cruze if Chevy ever decides to put it on sale. If I like both the Elantra and Civic I could see trying to play them off against each other. Many of the specs are nearly identical and I like that both support Android Auto. Can't say I really love the styling of one that much more than the other. I do like that the Touring has the LED headlights. I'm afraid they both might be too big for me though which will open a whole new can of worms.

I came from driving an '07 Fit, and the Civic is only larger by about 4 inches - which is mostly in the mirrors I think. It is a bit long though comparatively. How small are you thinking?

I'm driving a MINI Coupe now which is very small. I do need a little more space though.

Hyundai is supposed to come out with a 200+ hp turbo Elantra Sport with upgraded looks, 7 speed dual clutch or 6 speed manual and revised suspension/brake setup. Could be interesting.

Hyundai recently plucked BMW's performance guru Albert Biermann (he ran the M division) to improve their car's handling.

I'm actually waiting for this to come out to decide between the Elantra and the Civic.

Finally got around to driving the Civic Touring and the Elantra Limited with Ultimate package. Generally I think I like the styling of the Elantra better and I liked the touchscreen interface better than the Civic's. But the handling of the Elantra wasn't great. Even in "sport" mode the steering was very vague. Maybe driving MINIs for the last 9 years has just made it impossible for me to like another car's handling ability.

new Elantra looks like they took a 9th gen civic and slapped on a Ford Fusion grill.

Guys... let's face it, almost all cars are sort of copycats these days. Honda definitely took inspiration from the last gen Elantra for the overall coupe-like profile of the 10th gen Civic sedan...

Yeah I found it amusing that as Hyundai was walking away from that design Honda picked it up.
It's probably the main reason I switched.

Honda certainly has its fanatical fans in a way few other car brands do but undoubtedly Hyundai has made huge strides both in terms of product and sales over the last ten years.

On paper the current civic blew everything in its class out of the water so I was surprised to see the Elantra go through a similar explosion in new features. Had I known is definitely have waited to do a more direct comparison once the sport engine us out for the Elantra.

Yeh for me it will be interesting who wins out here....Honda took a risk and went with more aggressive styling...it's a risk because apart from us guys on this forum, they sell a ton of them because they are a reliable grocery getter and sell broadly across a demographic to men and women. Remains to be seen whether a design like this will have the same mass appeal as previous boring generations.

Hyundai is going the other way...they felt previous design was too aggressive and they moved to the middle...it will be interesting to see if they maintain and or grow share.

If your concerned re market share, I sense Hyundai made the smarter move

Who wins what? Honda sold more Civics last month than ALL Hyundai cars sold combined. They sold 3 times more civics than elantras. I don't even think this is a contest. People are voting with the Civic
