We all know that Honda is actually going to be pushing out software updates if there are problems with our infotainment systems. My question is, since there are no parts associated with this solution, will we be charged only for labor for these software updates after the warranty has expired/lost (due to modifications)?

Software updates are typically issued as a tsb. Therefore Honda pays the dealership to perform the service at no charge to you for the life of the vehicle.

There's an impressive amount of optimism in this thread. Let's hope.

It depends on what you mean by software update I suppose.
If it's an update to fix a feature that wasn't working properly to begin with, I'd imagine they'd handle it the way they handle any other problem in that category.

If it's something that would add a new feature to the car that didn't exist previously and wasn't promised at purchase?
Well, given their current way of handling things, where you have to go into the dealer for updates, they haven't shown any signs they intend to provide on going software updates that do anything other than fix problems.
From what I can tell only Ford has promised to actually add features to it's cars, and that's through a do it yourself method.
Once it actually costs Honda money to provide more value when they didn't promise any to begin with, well you see where i'm going.

Right, I'm really only thinking about fixing problems, much like you'd get anything else on a car fixed. I'm only really asking what payment would look like, although chances are they won't be making any updates to this car in 3 years, unless there's some problem that affects the honda infotainment system in ALL cars.

I'd say it probably depends on if they feel like they could have a class action law suit around it or not to be honest.

I was worried about sw updates down the road too. I made it a condition of sale that I receive sw upgrades to head unit at no charge on request for the life of the car. It's written on bill of sale.

Three big assumptions here:
1) Honda develops updates.
2) Honda announces updates so you'll know they exist.
3) Honda makes updates available for dealer installation.

We'll see.

For anyone who's interested, my service rep the other day mentioned that they will provide free updates for 60-70,000 miles.... Of course that's dependent on Honda making an update that is made for your car specifically. Its not like we'll get continuous updates for the life of the infotainment system like one does for a phone app.

Pcm updates are only 8/80, factory warranty since 2005, a tsb is not a recall, a software update for the infotainment system tsb or not, is just 3/36, unless it turns into a warranty extension or recall - but an infotainment update is not a pcm update. I'm fairly confident if there was an update and you were out of your 3/36, I'm sure honda would step up and get goodwill assistance for you

I paid $50 for a PCM update in my 06 Hybrid. However, a year later they issued a 'recall' update that was free (even post warranty). Within 3 years I am hoping they have an update for PCM and Infotainment. The Android Auto / Carplay updates should come from the phone, so you will get those updates past warranty
