I have 70% 3M crystalline on the front windshield. Keeps the car coolin the summer. Good visibility night and day. From outside the car looking in, the Cops can see your face in the shadow. Full sun the tint looks 90%. At night you can not see the driver. Has a nice Bronze effect when wet. I live near a LA county sheriff station and always drive by them. No haggle yet. I also believe getting pulled over depends on what your car looks like.

I have 20% front and passenger, and 5% rear. Have had no problems. But I do want to tint the front windshield, considering how hot it gets in the summer. Anyone have their windshield tinted at least a bit?

I just got pulled over for a warning for my Johnson IR85 (82% VLT) front side windows tint. Luckily he let me off with a warning. I thought that in California, we are allowed to have 70% VLT for the front. Or maybe he was just pulling me over to admire my Rally Red Hatch

On the 405 near LAX
Wow really?? Kinda odd to get pulled over for tint randomly on the freeway since almost everyone has tint. Were you on the cellphone? Because they have been cracking down hard on those violations. My wife just received a citation on the 5 for using her cell.

Nope nothing, I was driving normally, in traffic so wasn't speeding or swerving. I was with a carpool buddy so I was talking to her and not touching my phone. All the officer said was he pulled me over for my front tint, saying that you can't have anything in the front at all. It was really weird, especially since it was really trafficky and he picked my car to pull over just to give a warning . . . Maybe it was because i was driving a red hatch.

Reporting back. Still running 5% back and 35% front after a year. Didn't get pulled over once for it, no hassle, always drive by police and they don't seem to care.

Question: If my car was purchased, registered, license plated (and I have a Florida drivers license) and I get Florida legal tint (28% Front - 15% Back), can I get pulled over and ticketed in any other state for not abiding by their state tint laws? I always wondered this since I get threaten years ago by a cop in North Carolina when I was stationed there for 3 years. He never did give me a ticket but I always wondered if he was blowing smoke up my ass?

You have to abide by local laws. I'm not aware there is reciprocity/exemption if your is registered in another location. So while your car may be legal in one state, if you use it in another with illegal tint then that would be a violation.

I get you bro, but let's look at license plates. Some states require that you have a front and rear license plate where others require just the rear. Does that also mean I could get ticketed for just having a rear license plate in another state the requires both (just like tint)?

No different than emissions(CARB), ride height, and DB level - Local laws are the LAW! Unless you sell your car "as is" they can even void a sale.

The plates are just consistent with the state they were purchased from as it pertains to the specific registered location. Additional modifications and beyond are subjected to local laws.

If you get pulled over in a state that does not permit excessive tint it "may" get dismissed due to ignorance, but legally you'd still be on the hook.

So pretty much don't attract unwanted attention and put yourself at risk for them nitpicking your car? :|

For me personally it's not about the money (lost on having to take it off) or the fix it fee, I can pay for it. I don't have the time to deal with bringing it in to get it checked for the fix it ticket or screw with it. Some may have time for that, but I don't.

Also, I have removed window tint in the past. It's a very unpleasant process which is why if someone gets a really lousy tint job, the tinting shops will make up any excuse not to re-do it. I've heard it all, from it's "normal" to get stuff trapped under the tint, etc, etc....it takes awhile to take it off. Plus the rear windshield tint, if they are not careful you will damage your defroster grid on your new car. Also the adhesive never really gets 100% taken away kind of like when your window gets smashed, there's always a tiny piece somewhere. Same with window tint removed, tiny bits of residual adhesive winds up in the crevices of your window seals, etc, etc....the correct way is to slowly heat everything so there is no damage.

That's just the removal, installation usually 99% of shops will cut directly on your glass and not use a computer to pre-cut the film so there's a possibility of having your car glass damaged during the install process.

So for me, I'll pass......leave the issue for the next guy to deal with.

Btw, I did a form of law enforcement in the past, I was not a police officer, but I dealt with similar legal matters. At the end of the day, it is up to the discretion of each officer what they want to do. Some may give warnings, others may write it up. If it is law it's fair game end of story.
