Nothing was connected, Like @WOPcivic said, the ports do not work when you start with the remote key. nothing was plugged in , @kvnhmmd the cord you mention on the shifter is not a cord, its a cloth waste bag, i purchased from cvs , for waste.

Honestly i just want my money back and for this to not happen to anyone else, or for it to be checked out and figured out, Like i also mentioned before i don't know what caused it , i want honda to becareful, i usually have my siblings in the car to take them to school in the morning . it would have even been terrible if the car blew up or turned the car in complete flames, its not just about my car, its safety.
What if the car would have exploded and put the rest of the apartments on fire like the Ford issue was mentioned... Its honestly so crazy.

About the tampering, it was clear in the morning, apartment full of walking people around, i ruled that out quick too..
and i doubt it could have been from the storage pocket., everything is intact, the plastic is the only thing that melted on the middle storage. im gonna look for another picture, Im a woman

I just wanted to know what you guys thought , and to share.

Did you happen to notice any damage inside the engine bay?

One little factoid to put this unfortunate event in perspective. Honda sold 366,927 Civics in the USA last year, and 64,552 in Canada. Doesn't impress if you're the one who had a fire, but it does provide a sense of the larger picture. When you build 400,000 of anything, you probably see all kinds of odd one-off or low frequency failures.

Yep. Cars are just like any other complex consumer product. If Sony makes 500,000 TV sets, a few will be defective. Same if Boeing builds 500,000 aircraft. It's one thing cranking out half a million boxes of Cheerios...the product is a lot less intricate. Car or other complex goods have more potential failure points.

when i got to it , No, it was not running,

I started the car with the key less remote, because my control gives me the option to start the car, at 7:00, after i turned on the car with the remote, the car alarm went on about 3-5 seconds after, i did not think anything of it. i came down at 7:12 am, noticed the car front window was shattered. I opened the door and the fire was out, the window was shattered i assume from the fume that couldn't get out. I thought what might have been a small flame but again, i was in shock. When i came down my car was as pictured, with the melted dashboard. I called the fire department, they took out the battery. I contacted the Honda dealer the same day and they said wouldn't be able to help, to make a claim via my insurance. I did , they still dont want to take a look or have a joint inspection. :/// Its been exactly a month.

Which Honda dealer in SoCal was it that said they wouldn't be able to help ?

No doubt. What a feeling to have gassed out your children as they were playing minecraft in the backseat or to have this happen to you as you were driving down the road. I'm sure this would take your attention of the wheel.

My girls are addicted to games and they're always sitting in the back seat on their boosters. Honda needs to at least look into this for all of us civic owners.

K, just to douse the flames a bit (ha), the damage is indicative of a slow burn.

Even if repeated, nothing would have blown up or exploded, or caught fire to the point where any occupants are in immediate threat due to fire.

From Honda's (Dealer or Manufacturer) perspective this is 100% an insurance claim. Were they to take back the car for investigation, it would have taken the car away from the insurance company, which is why I suspect they told OP to take to insurance.

FWIW, there were Ridgelines a few years back where the stereo wiring harness would short if bumped from the inside and cause dash fires; I suspect it is likely what's happened here.

Just throwing out ideas, seeing as how the windshield shattered like that, could the sun have refracted off a window nearby and become focused on the windshield, and eventually the dash? If the source of heat was external, then there's really no need for anybody here to start worrying about the safety of their minecraft playing children.

That was definitely a smoldering fire, likely caused by an electrical short in the dash.
If there had been people in the car and they couldn't get out (ie children in car seats or a non-mobile adult) they could have been asphyxiated. (Most burning plastics emit a poisonous gas.)
Post #6 (NHTSA) is the best way to go but you should also alert Honda Corporate. The underlying cause, if not owner induced, should be a concern for all 10th Generation Civic owners.

I regret to learn of your loss. What's the status of your insurance claim?

I think remote start is irrelevant here.

Its just the fact that when power was turned on something shorted or blew. I don't think using the remote start had anything to do with that so I would advise people not to worry about using that feature in the future.

Not to mention this is a freak accident.
