I fixed the link. Thanks for the heads up.
Has anyone with a 2016 gotten this update completed? I am curious if our systems are allowed to have this update...? I know it states only for 2017, but didn't know if it was backwards compatible.

Will all 2016 CVT customers be getting this update?

I hope they fix it before I'm broke down somewhere and have to be transported to a dealer.

I've never been stranded in my Hondas.
Pretty sure I ran into this when I took the kids to the park a few weeks back. Upon trying to leave the park, my 2016 Touring would not start and display several system "failures."

If it is the same thing, and it sounds like it was, the work order to get me back on the road was to replace the TCM and update software per this service bulletin. Whatever the case, I have not had any problems since.

I don't get the impression they (Honda) will proactively do this but I could be wrong.

I have useful information! I made an appointment for routine maintenance on my 2016 Touring and I inquired about this technical service bulletin about the car not coming out of park or will not start. I was told by my service technician that Honda is NOT making this a recall because it is NOT a safety issue. Honda does recognize the issue and of course if it happens to you they will cover the cost of replacement of the transmission control module and do the necessary updates to the PCM to match the new TCM. I was also told that Honda will NOT pay the initial quoted price of around $600 for replacement of part and updating unless it happens to you. So far my dealership has had only a few cases considering all the Civics that have been sold. I was told that if the car DOES start you could not get out of park unless you take the metal key that is in the key fob (for cars with the pushbutton start) and insert it into a slit that you would find down in the center console and that would unlock the car out of park. This is not a fix to the issue but at least you would be able to move the car and get it to your dealer for replacement of the TCM, etc. For cars that do not start you would indeed be stuck and have to have the car towed to your dealership. Honda will fix this issue ONLY if it occurs. There will be NO GENERAL RECALL so it's the luck of the draw. It may happen to you and it may not, I was told. For those whose car does NOT start you would be really stuck depending upon where you are! For me, since I use my car to commute into NYC and park in a garage, there is the definite possibility of being stuck in the city and having to have the car towed 50 miles up north from the city where I live in a northern suburb. I decided I cannot take this chance and I am having the replacement done at my cost because I need peace of mind. My dealership is working with me and I got a price of $370 for the replacement transmission control module and the necessary updating and labor. It's better than the $600 initially quoted. I would imagine if this issue becomes more prevalent, then maybe Honda would do a recall at which point I would be reimbursed for my out-of-pocket expense. To me it's worth the expense to have peace of mind as you just don't know if this issue is going to happen to you. Like yourself, I have NEVER been stranded in my Hondas and this is my 5th one. If I can help it I want to keep my record going of not getting stuck! I will have this work done in the upcoming week. Good luck to you and I hope all this information helps you make an informed decision!

You are right about Honda NOT doing anything proactively. It is NOT considered a safety issue, therefore there is no recall planned. I was told that Honda is extending the warranty on the transmission control module, etc. However that really doesn't help you when you are stranded and have to have your nice new car towed to the dealership! I am having mine replaced at my own expense as I need to have peace of mind as I drive into NYC every day and do not want to get stuck there and have my car towed 50 miles north to my dealership near my home!

No, the issue regarding the car not starting or can't get out of park.
I was referring to the info on the infotainment system. Not the tranny, but thanks.
