Is anyone here a current or previous owner of a 2015 or 2016 CRV? On the fence between this 2016 civic or the crv. Small family so either size will work. I know the spec differences between each but curious about real world experiences from anyone that has had both and of course any recommendations. Not interested in an accord because that's what I have now and would like to try something different

We replaced our Pilot with a Civic. Doing the downsizing thing. When comparing we felt the CRV felt too much like the Pilot. My wife has an HRV which is fabulous. Lots of room. If it had a bit more sportiness I would have bought another one for me. My teenage son also had a bit of say.

Working at a Honda dealer, I can tell you that there is a dramatic difference between the CRV and the Civic, and not because one is a car and the other an SUV. Have you noticed how the new Civic, Pilot and HRV feel very much like a premium product? That's because they are the first stage of Honda's plan of basically selling premium cars for non-luxury money. The 2017 CRV will be next in line, since it is built on the Civic platform. The new CRV will see a big improvement over the current model, which is already a great vehicle.

To me, if you need to buy a car now, it comes down to this:

Do you live in an area that gets snow, long commute to work? Get a CRV.

Do you need space to load tall or large items often? Get a CRV

It is a great SUV, but only the Touring gives you the premium feel and safety (Honda Sensing is exclusive on this trim only) that you can get in lower trim 2016 Civics.

If your needs do not require AWD or a larger size, then the Civic is the better value. You can get Honda Sensing on any trim with a CVT, much better MPG, more premium looking exterior and interior, and...well...will drive a lot sportier, if that's a feature you appreciate.

And if you really need AWD, do not want to spend Touring money, yet are not in a rush, then wait for the 2017 CRV.

PM or text me if you have any more questions

@HondaGeek Thank you so much for your insight, really appreciate having folks like you that work at Honda dealerships comment on this board. It gives us buyers a different perspective.

I agree with everything you said. We have 2 kids so the "family" side of me says to get the CRV for more space and higher seating position. But when I see the CRV, the design just looks dated as you mentioned. It's basically the same as 2015 and maybe even 2014. The gauges look old and need a redesign compared to the civic's digital gauges, the infotainment system looks older compared to the civic, no apple/android carplay, no remote start, and no honda sensing unless you get the Touring model. I'm planning to get the civic ex 2.0L so the price difference between that and the crv touring is about $10,000 which is a lot. It just feels like as you mentioned the civic got all the new technologies while the crv has to play catch up in a year or two, and I fear regretting having an older technology crv in a couple years. I'm very techie and I see the civic as more future proof (similar to buying computers but at a much higher price point making it not as easy to replace).

Definitely leaning towards the civic with the bonus of it being larger in size. I have a 2001 Accord which works for us and frankly, it's the same size as my accord so we won't be losing any size at all

I have a 2014 CR-V EX, it replaced my 2010 Element I sold to my brother last year.

I got a great deal on it and it serves it's purpose. I ride dirt bikes and haul them around on a trailer with my CR-V, something not possible with my Civic.

I have a 2.0l Civic and I love it, but they are 2 completely different vehicles.

As mentioned by HondaGeek when you need to haul big stuff around the CR-V is a great tool for this, you can pack a lot of stuff in that thing, especially with the rear seats down.

I recently hauled a fully assembled Waterower in the back, had to scoot the passenger seat up all the way, but it fit, it's around 7 feet long!

A couple friends of mine recently got a 2015 CR-V's and they are not all that different from my 2014.

The tech is just not there yet on the CR-V, I too am a bit of a techie and going back and forth from vehicle to vehicle its very evident.

Since no Carplay in the CR-V I actually have an old Ipod touch that I just leave in it plugged in, I only use my iPhone in the Civic.

Now if you workout at all, I am old and do CrossFit, getting out of the Civic is quite a chore after a gnarly leg WOD!

It's a lot easier sliding out of the CR-V after leg day at the box!

I have also hauled 5 people comfortably in the CR-V, and so far only 4 in my Civic, but all where just as happy in the Civic.

If you're not in a hurry I would seriously wait to see what the 2017 crv looks like it will be a drastic change from what you've been getting used to with this design that they've been using also I'm sure you will be seeing some spy shots of the new crv with in a few months so you'll get an idea of the shape

I've owned up to a 2012 CR-V, so same basic vehicle sans updated tech and headlights.

If the threads about the new Civic infotainment do not worry you, then I do not see a reason to spend more on the CR-V for utility that you will not use over the Civic.

Will the CR-V's 2.4 engine be replaced with a 1.5 turbo for 2017 model year? So it won't get bigger and be a copy of the Pilot?

How about the 2017 HR-V? Will its 1.8 be replaced with the Civic's 2.0, and have the 1.5 turbo available?

I have the 2014 CR-V LX and 2016 Civic EX-T. Since you're on the fence I guess the cargo space is not a concern for you. I like the civic better, more fun to drive, better mileage, and my wife and kid claims that the seating in the back is better than in the CR-V. The main advantage of the CR-V (for us) is room for junk :)

Thank you for this thread. I am trying to see if the civic will be better or worse than the crv for navigating crowded 2 way city streets. Which is easier to recognize the "corners" of the vehicle. I`m 69" and considering adding shims to the front seats. Does more height make the crv easier,
even though the crv is 1.6" wider?
I'm also 5'9" and I drive both cars, I don't find either one better/worse in that aspect, frankly you'll just get used to it (size/width/corners of car). Previously I drove an Odyssey with no backup camera so I may be biased ;) Being shorter the civic will be able to get you into a tighter parking spot.

Edit: I was wrong about civic being shorter. I just looked at them in my garage, they're about the same.

Kinda curious to see what the redesign will look like. Loved my 2011 CR-V (despite wishing it had just a little bit more torque sometimes) and while I admit the gen I had looks a bit dated compared to the current gen - theres just something about the current ones I dont like style wise, mainly in regards to where the rear windows lines meet at such a pointed slope....

Well I think they will take some risk with the redesign and I believe it will look great and I also can't wait to get my eyes on one especially since working at the plant that builds them they're a big part of my daily life

Read somewhere that the redesigned CRV could have a third row of seating. Great for some but getting too big for our requirements.
