Thanks!THis is a great price! ..... though the numbers can get a little scewed when you have a trade in. They could say they are lowering the price, but they are really just givving you a little less for your trade in; based on what they figure they can get for your trade in on the other side.
but either way , sounds like a great deal. congratz!
Oh yes, the trade in is another beast entirely. That's why I left it out the first time.
I suggest you negotiate without talking too much about the trade in. Then negotiate on the trade in. Then negotiate on the entire price. You have a fair amount of leverage because you can always walk away from the deal, but they are very unlikly to resend their offer.
I had a quote from CarMax for 6k so I had a floor to work with. Taking into account tax savings an offer of $5,700 from the dealer would have been equivalent. They started with a low ball offer of 5K. Thank god my fiancee was there talked them up to 6.5K. I would have caved way earlier! In fact I just should have left during that because I'm sure she would do waaaaay better without me.
If I had more time I would have taken that offer to another dealer about 30 minutes away and see if I could have gotten some more out of it, but my time was limited and I've been having problems with my old car and was anxious to be done with it. Overall I feel okay about it.
The only reason to sell it to the place you buy your car is if you get a better deal (although there are tax savings if you do). I may have sold it privately if it wasn't having issues, but I didn't feel good about doing that.
