Via Carbuzz:

The new Civic Type R needs to cut three seconds off its previous best time.

Last year, the project leader for the new Honda Civic Type R, Hisayuki Yagi, told Top Gear Magazine that the hot hatch would be made even hotter if its Nurburgring record lap time was taken. Volkswagen and its Golf GTI Clubsport S took the front-wheel-drive Nurburgring lap record from the Type R not once but twice in 2016. We wanted to see if Honda was planning to try and take back the title in 2017, so we reached out to the automaker and were told that yes, it would attempt a record run in 2017.

Honda didnā€™t explicitly say that the run would target Volkswagen, only letting slip that it would attempt to topple its own best time of 7:50.63. ā€œI think it's fair to assume that we'll pursue our own personal best record, and if it beats out other cars that have run the 'Ring, even better,ā€ a Honda PR rep told us. Whether or not that record attempt comes in a modified Type R is up in the air. During Hondaā€™s last record attempt it removed the air conditioning unit in order to offset the weight gained by the added roll cage. Other than that it said the Type R sported a stock engine, suspension and tires. The Golf that currently owns the FWD ā€˜Ring record isnā€™t exactly a daily driver. There are no rear seats, no center armrest and no floor mats.

Hell, even the material used to sound-proof the cabin has been stripped. Even the battery was downsized to cut weight! Only 400 GTI Clubsport S models were made, making it almost like a purpose-built Nurburgring machine. (It basically is.) The Civic Type R will be built in low volumes but not that low. We asked when Honda will make its record run and will let you know if we get a date or timeframe. Winter is coming, so donā€™t expect it to be soon.

Was there ever some buzz about an AWD Civic Type R at one time ? I thought there was one in being considered.

Yes, their WRC team leader was saying they need one to remain competitive against Subaru. That lead to wild speculation that the CTR would be AWD based on the CRV drive train.

I can see the new R being 5 seconds faster then the old car.
I'm gonna go bold and say it shaves off nearly 10 seconds from the 7:50 time.

They can use my future car if they hit that's time I don't mind one bit.

Well, even a 5 second improvement would be impressive, knocking off some very expensive cars, and tying with the Mercedes CLK Black.

10 seconds would put it into serious super-car territory. That would be faster than the Corvette Z06, and tie it with the Lamborghini Murcielago. That would be a stunning feat of engineering.

I hope you're right.:headbang:

I spoke to a R&D employee of the current Euro Type-R, and he said they didn't get the maximum horsepower out of this k20c engine yet. So I'm expecting an increase of about 10/15 horsepower minimum, which will help set a better lap time. The car is going to be lighter and stiffer due to the new constructions and platform, but most important I think is the longer wheelbase and lower profile of the car. Higher corner speed and less drag. 3 seconds faster would be pretty 'easy' for a lap that long. My guess would be 5 seconds!

Honda has stated publicly that the K20C has plenty left in it. Honda is well known for leaving a little bit on the table. Look at what people are doing with a simple port job to the heads...

Speaking of which, 4piston Racing now has their hands on a K20C. -check their Facebook or Instagram.

And yet we still see people posting questions about the Type-R being AWD. Sigh.
