Minimum would be following the maintenance reminder. I will be doing it around 4000 mile on this car. Yes, it is just a civic. But the engine has Direct Injection + turbo charged. It is a very stressed engine since it is a tiny 1.5L engine pushing out 190hp at the wheel.

Just bought my first new car in August. 2016 Honda Civic Coupe.

I believe the salesman at the dealer said to change the oil every 5,000 miles. My oil life is at 50%. Do I change it every 5,000 miles or do I wait for the indicator light to tell me I need it?

From what I am reading that won't be until around 9,000 miles. That seems like quite a lot since I changed the oil on my old honda accord about every 3,000-4,000 miles.

I am unsure of what to do since I want the best care for my civic to make it last long.

Thanks!
You could possibly get several answers here...Honestly I change all my oil in my vehicles every 5,000miles with a tire rotation. Makes it easier for me to remember since I have to maintain so many. I normally do the tranny about every 15,000 miles. Now, some would say this is too soon and others would say it's not soon enough on the oil....I have been doing it this way for years and never had an issue. Just my thoughts though....

P.S. However, I never did buy the cheapest oil or filter either...normally when I did an oil change myself it costs me about $50..if that tells you anything.

As far as the tranny goes...I do that for peace of mind on the CVT.....I've heard people with 200,000miles on one only with 2 fluid changes and no issues....again just peace of mind thing for me.

4k? Do you do stop-and-go driving primarily? I mean, do whatever you want for peace of mind, but that's seriously overkill. This engine isn't really working that hard.

Previously driving was roughly 80% highway, first oil change at just under 10k, second at just over 20k. With more mixed driving, I'd expect at least 6k-7k before the maintenance minder (which I'd follow) gets to 15%

Had to kill us old mechanics off Billy. LOL We just love the 3-5K mile interval changes. HEHE. Again, just a personal preference I knew there would be a wide variation of opinion with this inquiry. Same as if someone some run thicker oil......

couple reasons gets me to change the oil at 4000 miles.

a) My daily work commute are all stop and go.
b) direct injection is famous for carbon build up.
c) best NA 1.5L production engine from Honda (2015-up fit) cranks out a whopping 130Hp, ours cranks out 190hp at the wheel on 87 octane fuel. it is a hardworking busy engine.
D) 0w-20 is a very thin oil with a low oil sheering point and our engine doesent even take 4 quart (3.7 quart with oil filter)....
For real, when is the last time you know a turbocharged engine being recommended to use 20 weight oil..
E) My car only has 470 miles, engine oil life indicator already dropped to 90% (all from work commute).

I might be paranoid but I am planning to drive this car for a long time.

Just follow the maintenance minder and change oil when oil life is below 15%.

Honda recommendation is every 7500 mi or 1 year, whichever comes earlier.

So either way, the maintenance minder will pop in that time frame.. Mine did after 11 months (I am assuming the car sat in the dealership for sometime before I bought it so give or take a year) with a 15% oil life. I had only 3200 mi on it and I heeded the warning and changed oil owing to the time oil was sitting in.

I think everything I stated are facts. I might be over-protecting it but I also kept a 35 years old turbo-charged car running with original engine and transmission days in and days out, the car still gives out a healthy 20+mpg.

I don't know what it is but I just don't trust 20k/km or 1 year OCI.

No, I'm not an engineer nor a mechanic. LOL

I guess the cost of DIY is nothing that this is just to clear my head of any doubts when I drive my Murano like a 370Z. It cost me about $60 (CAN) to change the oil (Castrol 0W-30, Mobil 1 Filter) every 7-8k/km or 4-5 months, which is nothing to me. I spend that amount on Second Cup coffee in 1=2 weeks.

I've been at this since 2002 when I started to DIY.

I was taught the same thing when I bought my first car,a 71 Datsun 510 in 1978.I currently run M1 in all my cars and change my oil myself at 5k.Probably don't need to but do it anyway.

Man, you guys kill me. Anybody at the dealer that tells you something speaks from what THEY want NOT what Honda wants. There's a reason why Honda has a Maintenance Minder and that's to eliminate questions like this. When do you change your oil? Sometime before 0%. I'm at 8,500 miles and will get it changed hopefully tomorrow as I'm at 5%. I go "above and beyond" on our Pilot (since I can do it myself) by doing it right at 15%. There is no reason to do it earlier. Sure, people will tell you that "5,000 miles" is a nice number. Others will say to go ahead and change the Transmission Fluid then too, because they've "never had transmission issues" by doing that. There is zero evidence or reason to do anything other than what the people who designed and built the vehicle tell you to do.

Who are you going to trust? The guys that designed and tested and experimented and had zero reason to make oil changes less frequent, but did it because they want to help you out or are you going to trust the guys that want to charge you $200 for a "A1" or "B1" service with unnecessary checks.

You trust Honda to build a reliable vehicle but not to make a vehicle that can go longer between oil changes?

Get it done at 5% to 15%. Use Synthetic if it makes you feel better. Yes, it'll be fine for the Air Filters to be replaced at 30k when it tells you to (just use a Honda Engine Filter like they recommend) just like the Coolant and Spark Plugs actually can go 100k miles.

Don't be scammed by people that have their hands in your pocket.
