Water gets thrown up from the rear tires and onto the car. On a sedan, the rear window is far enough from the spray but on a hatch, it isn't, hence the need for a wiper. Why do hatchbacks need rear wipers and sedans don't? I personally don't like the look of rear wipers.
That does happen, but the bigger factor is that a sedan has airflow that brings beads of water and drifts of snow to the rear of the trunk lip while in a flat backed hatch it just gathers there on the back window and blocks the view. That is the visible result of poor aerodynamics, the invisible result is that the Civic Hatch loses 2 mpg to the sedan.Water gets thrown up from the rear tires and onto the car. Only the sport and sport touring use the premium fuel and its only suggested, not required. One of the main reasons I got the hatch over the sedan/coupe was that it came with the 1.5L Turbo on the lowest trim (Hatch LX vs having to buy the EX-T for 2000$ more), and had all the features I cared about already. In addition having to carry camping and hiking gear inside the hatch is much easier than the sedan. Since I'm a fairly young guy, the styling on the hatchback also won me over compared to the Sedan
P.S. What worried me about the higher trim Hatchback models is that they require premium fuel (not sure why for 6 more HP) as opposed to be able to use base grade for the LX.
You're right it's only recommended.Only the sport and sport touring use the premium fuel and its only suggested, not required.
I loved the look of the '16 sedans when they came out, and the only other brand new car I had purchased previously was the '06 Civic, when they came out in Sept. 2005. But when I heard the hatchback was coming, I decided to wait and see if I'd like them. My last few cars have been SUVs, and I think, for me at least, deciding between an SUV or the hatch is a better comparison than the sedan vs. the hatch. The only thing I had to decide was whether I'd mind sitting lower in the vehicle. When I saw the EX-L hatch in person, I just loved it. Other than it being harder to get out of because it's lower, I haven't missed an SUV. I'm loving the 39 mpg avg. and it's way more fun to drive than an SUV, even V6 ones I've had.One of the main reasons I got the hatch over the sedan/coupe was that it came with the 1.5L Turbo on the lowest trim (Hatch LX vs having to buy the EX-T for 2000$ more), and had all the features I cared about already. My experience as well. Liked the sedan, test drove one, then heard rumors of the hatch. Glad we waited. Picked up our Sonic Gray EXL Friday afternoon. It's a perfect car for our needs, a blast to drive (compared to my Jeep Wrangler anyway), and I love the fuel economy and technology of the car. Is it perfect? I dunno - but I'm not as much of an "enthusiast" as others on this forum. It meets my needs. As they say in the car business, there's an ass for every seat .I loved the look of the '16 sedans when they came out, and the only other brand new car I had purchased previously was the '06 Civic, when they came out in Sept. 2005. No question the cargo area is bigger, more versatile and more accessible than the sedan, and you don't see what's stored in the back due to 2 covers that come with the hatch. I haven't hauled anything that interferes with rear visibility yet, and 98% of the time, no one will.
There's no wrong, or better choice, it's what you prefer and what meets your needs.
Congrats! The SGP is an awesome color. Post some pics.My experience as well. Liked the sedan, test drove one, then heard rumors of the hatch. Glad we waited. Completely agreed. The moment I threw my mountain bike in the back without a problem is the moment I knew I made the right choice. Although I really need to invest in mud covers for the trunk now.I loved the look of the '16 sedans when they came out, and the only other brand new car I had purchased previously was the '06 Civic, when they came out in Sept. 2005. Nice post! I concur except for one thing: A new enthusiast has been born or Honda hatched a new fan with this hatch, as "they say". Like a new comic book release. My experience as well. They gangsta to me. And the tails on the hatch look like 2 chopsticks being held at 90 degrees. Why do hatchbacks need rear wipers and sedans don't? I personally don't like the look of rear wipers.
I know, right! It's going to rain the day after tomorrow so I got 1 day to get it done. A tint too.Completely agreed. The moment I threw my mountain bike in the back without a problem is the moment I knew I made the right choice. Although I really need to invest in mud covers for the trunk now.
