I do have some concerns about the CVT not having stood the test of time yet. My current civic's transmission bombed on me so it's kind of shaken my faith in Honda's quality, but the posts above put me a little at ease.

Are any of you considering getting an extended warranty for the sake of the transmission? I was quoted over $4k to get a refurbed replacement tranny on my current civic.

Are you referring to a failure of a 4-speed automatic?

How often was the transmission fluid changed in your 2002 Civic? I have a 2006 with just under 200k miles and I change the trans fluid every two years.

I followed the mileage schedule, it wasn't ever 2 years though ( didn't drive that much). My tranny died around 140k miles. But like i said earlier, the 2001 and 2002 civics were notoriously bad with their transmissions (there was even a recall on the clutch packs) and they fixed it for 2003.

Acura had issues with their automatics a few years back as well. (Traditional step autos) a lady I work with has replaced the auto in her TL 3 times in the span of about 150k miles. Now her sons TL needs a new transmission too after 53k miles.

Yeah that's the "glass tranny" issue, also happened to 5th Gen Prelude Sportshifts.

I just realized my co-worker has a 2001 Civic, and yes he had the trans and engine rebuilt last year. I think he was at 100K miles. That Civic (I think is the 7th gen) is part of that whole generation(s) of Hondas I pretty much ignored. I didn't realize even the Civic had trans issues....

I also wasn't aware they had any issues with the 4AT; I assumed it was the same 4AT they'd been using with the D-series engines from mid-80s through 05. My '99 4AT has 264k miles on it and going strong.

In general Honda's 4AT transmissions are very reliable - with their weak point being lack of maintenance. Not doing transmission fluid changes are a surefire prescription for failure. But it also sounds like they had a bad batch there, if the situation is as firstblud notes.

That said, I would never pay $4k for a replacement transmission, firstblud! Heck, I'd buy a used $4k Civic before I'd spend that much on repairs. No need to get a reman unit - just get a used one from a junkyard or craigslist. They should be easy to find and less than $500 (a quick search found quite a few in my local area) then pay someone to swap it in and do a fresh fluid change.

The 2016 Civics with the turbo engine get the Accord CVT!

The 2016 Civics with the 2.0l engine get the Civic CVT!

The thing about a CVT is that it often feels slower than it actually is. The constant drone seems like it's struggling vs the changes of gears.

Have you driven a new Earth Dreams CVT? You can't generalize "a CVT" any more than you can generalize "an automatic." (Or for that matter, "a manual.") There are many different variations.

I've mentioned it before given i had a 2013 civic with the 5 speed auto and now have a 2014 civic with the CVT, the CVT feels quicker. The fact you don't lose power between shifts makes the car feel like its pulling harder than it is because it stays in the optimal rev range during acceleration. Hands down the CVT feels faster than the old 5 speed autos did even if the actual performance gains were less than half a second to 60.

I was really scared to buy the new civic because of the cvt but you guys have put me at ease. With what you guys have said I feel more confident because I'm looking for a car that will look good and also last me at least 10 years and since cvt has a bad rep I wasn't so sure but thanks for all your help everyone. I still am a little scared about it but not as much.

Best way to put yourself at 100% ease is test drive one. I did over the long weekend and the CVT is perfectly good. Dispelled any negative impressions I had of it from just reading about CVT from other manufacturers.

It's not a high performance type of transmission of course and efficiency is one of its main goals, but the acceleration was brisk and I got used to the non gear change feel after just a bit.

Thank you, what you said sounds great! and yea I'm planning on doing that soon, I've been dying to test drive one I just haven't had the chance.
