Will I get torque steer changing wheel size?

Hi,

I’m thinking of changing my wheel size from the standard 20” x 8.5” ET60 to 19” x 9” ET43.

Will this give me any torque steer or should it be okay? I know people are running 18” x 9.5” but personally the 18s are too small for me.

Thanks,
Brandon

I just switched to 18x9.5 +45 and went to an UHP AS tire and didn’t notice any handling difference. I actually pushed the car uphill and slightly wet and the car didn’t have the same traction issues and hooked up better. I believe the 255 vs 245 tire helped here.

Sounds good. Just hoping it’s the same if I get 19x9 +43’s that I’m looking at. You think the 255 will be better than the 245 for the 19”?

My 18x8 +42 (still running 245 width tires) gave my car a slight bit of torque steering when I swapped it out. It’s nothing huge, but it’s definitely there and noticeable.

So do you think 19x9 +43 would be less of a difference as it’s closer to standard?

It's barely anywhere close to standard. Standard on the Type R is +60. If you want to avoid torque steer you'd want to get as close to +60 as possible. Something like the Motegi MR924 would probably be my suggestion if you had any doubts regarding torque steer as it would hit +53. NSX 19" wheels might be another option as they come at +55 or the FK2/FK8 Sportline wheels come at 19x8.5 +60.

If I recall, by moving to 9.5 wide wheel the wheel moves out enough where the matching scrub radius offset would be +47. I can say after driving stock wheels to new wheels back to back the grip seems to have gone up with the wider tire. I noticed less wheel hop/torque steer with the wider tire and larger sidewall.

Yeah well that was the reason I was after a 9” wheel so I could put 245 or 255 tyres on for more grip. I just really want these 19” alloys I’ve seen and they’re ET43. Just hoping they don’t give me much torque steer because I know there’ll be more grip with a wider tyre

Isn't scrub radius measured from the center of the wheel thus making width irrelevant to the issue?

That’s probably right. I only remembered seeing a post on here about +47 offset with 9.5 wheel matching the +60 8.5.

Either way, I’ve pushed it hard enough on the street to not see a difference for me which is nice. Plus the 18s no longer feel like Oregon trail wagon wheels so +R mode is used more often.

You will not have any perceivable difference in torque steer with that setup.
