Yeah, there isn't much to be gained by buying a used Civic, just like buying a used Corolla isn't worth it. With used, you have to pick a car that nobody wants but is still a good car - like the xB - not much difference between an xB and CR-V when there were new, but huge differences used - for exactly the reasons you don't want one! Also, the big drops in value are at four years, and/or 100k kms. Not much to be gained on a low-mileage two-year old used car.

90lb dog => hatchback or wagon to me.

As you're not averse to VW's, you might want to see what is around that is VW "Certified Pre-owned" (gets you good financing rates) and qualifies for the "Volkswagen Assurance Premium Program." (<5yr old <120k kms) That'll get you a 2yr 40k full warranty extension - and you really, really, really want a full-coverage factory extended warranty on a VW.

Yea you bet. Funny thing is I did look into the xB, and love the fact that the hatch is ver low and there is a lot of room inside. But once I see what the interior looks like with the gauges in the middle... and the seat... its a no go for me. Since xB is not a populate model, there is like 3 used around the city. found a 2014 for $15K. If thats the case, I would rather get a 14 Mazda 3 for extra $1000. Probably will be able to sell it better in the futures.

As for another VW, just can't do it. like mention, i owned 12 GTI and 16 Golf R now. Also forgot to mention, my wife drives a Jetta. So 2 VW in the family is enough and trust me when I say, those bills aren't cheap if things go wrong. Especially both my R and my Wife is turbo car. So more maintain are require.

I am really set on the hatch as well. But still want to say one last thing, we never drive people in the back seat. So the dog going in the back is fine as well. That's how we get around with my civic or my wife's jetta (if require).

Thanks for the input tho. :)

The new CVT is about as fun as the Mazda 6 speed auto, I don't think there's that big a difference vs say, CVTs from 2-3 years ago.

The 1.5T blows away the 2.0L in the Mazda so I don't see the case for the Mazda unless you're going for the upscale models with really nice interior and loaded with features.

Have you considered the new Impreza? Or get a deal on an outgoing last gen Impreza Sport or Crosstrek?

I totally agree. CVT from back then was pretty bad but since then it definitely gotten a lot better. As for the 1.5T vs 2.0L, I am actually comparing the 2.0 from civic to 2.0 from Mazda 3. Like mention before, I am on a budget and I already have a 2016 Golf R with close to 300hp/300 lb/ft toque.

I did look into the impreza as well. They are little more due to the AWD system. I live in Edmonton, Alberta. AWD would be nice but I will end up paying at least $3 to $4k more compare to Civic Lx or Mazda 3 Gx. I have been driving with FWD for the last 7 years since I got my license at 20. And with proper Winter tire, I have been fine. :) So AWD is not the main concern. But like mention, be nice to have. Which bring in another concern then, its the milage, it will drop a bit. But not enough to not put it on my short list. :)

Sorry about being picky. Its not a small purchase :)

So in quick summary you want a wagon for under $23k Canadian. The Civic HB is too expensive, so you are looking at the base LX or Base Mazda 3. Your needs seem to scream wagon/hatch though, so personally I would suggest a Corolla 1M, or a different Honda like the HRV or Fit.

Not necessary has to be a wagon/hb. Again, I am fine with a Civic Sedan. I am pretty set on either a Civic Lx Sedan, Mazda 3 and Base Impreza. The $23k is just a guideline and if i need to increase, I don't mind increase a bit. Just not another $4K to get the hatch. I hope I didn't upset anyone, from the first post, I am simply asking opinion on Civic LX Sedan vs Mazda 3. A lot of the comment was comparing 1.5T Civic to the 2.5L Mazda 3.

Corolla IM is also price at $24K as well, It is on the list to be honest. as for HRV or Fit, those are no for me for sure. HRV with AWD can be more expensive and a Mid Range Fit is like $21.5K already and I do personally believe Civic would have a higher resell value.

Just my 2cent lol

I was just thinking about the dog in a sedan, but if you pay the 220ish dollars for the rear seat cover you should be golden. I and everyone here are probably gonna lean towards the Civic. The Mazda (at least in the USA) is several grand more for the same equipment level with the options I was looking for. On top of that it is slower (even with the 2.0's compared), will not have Honda resale value, and gets noticeably worse gas mileage in the real world. It's really pretty close though, they are the best two styled options out there if you ask me and they look nothing alike so it's up to you to decide which style you prefer. I love the 3's exterior, but the interior is too organic for me. I like the purposeful angular styling of the Civic dash, and the infotainment is much better.

Well it's official. After compiling all mid 2016 reviews and 2017 reviews, the Mazda 3 edged out the Civic in both the small car segment and hatchback segment. They are both reported to be excellent buys; but the Mazda3 got a nod in handling and interior touches. While the Civic scored a little better in fuel economy.

Civic feels a lot quicker (1.5t), hatch seems a lot more spacious, rear seat in 3 is claustrophobic. Road noise was borderline abusive in the 3 I test drove.
