Is it a bad idea to install snow tires on the OEM wheels?
Long ago, I had snow tires without wheels. Every fall, a tire mechanic would unmount the summer tires, then mount snow tires on the car's OEM aluminum wheels. I found that you can only install and remove a tire so many times before it leaks. My car was rear wheel drive, and I was really disappointed to get two flat tires in one week when the temperature dropped near zero. The tires just did not seal well after being installed and removed multiple times.

This year, I bought four winter tires and four steel wheels, just so I won't have those cold temperature flats.

For a type R, using smaller wheels will let you use a tire with a higher sidewall, which will do better at surviving potholes You can also get a narrower tire that should work better in snow. But don't give up too much in overall diameter, because in the snow you want to have as much ground clearance as possible.

$450 per snow tire should be considered robbery.

It's not robbery if you consent to it without coercion, my choice. Couldn't find another 20" UHP true winter tire, which is what I wanted. That's the Tire Rack price, though I got them from a regional chain (Town Fair Tire) that matches TR and provides great after the sale service and bought very good used OEM wheels for winter on the Internet for $1200. They look good, handle well, and wore well through last winter. However if the winters stay mild I would next time consider a less expensive all-season tire for the winter only.

$450 per snow tire should be considered robbery.

Rial 18x8 ET30 wrapped in Conti WinterContact SI 225/45/18.
Super boring 5 spoke wheels but I think they make for a clean look on this car. Also the ET30 really brings out the wheels nicely.

Better and cheaper to go with dedicated winter setup--smaller wheels and tires---than to get snow tires for OEM '20 wheels. The smallest and narrowest that will fit are 18x8.

From TireRack, I went with 18x8 Moda MD24 and 225/45/18 Michelin X-Ice snow tires, which came out to ~$1,124 + shipping. Four Pirelli Winter Sottro 3 snow tires in OEM size would cost ~$1,650 + shipping.

It's a no brainer, other than needing storage space for the additional set of wheels+tires.
I've heard it can be difficult finding proper rims/tires because of the clearance. Im new to having a type r, and im tryijg to get winters asap. Im going to see michilin xice 225/45 r18 tomorrow, in your experience how was driving in the snow?

I installed P Sottozero RunFlats 245/40 R18s last year and used them all winter. I like the run flats because I didn't want to get stuck somewhere with a flat in the winter. It was a decent experience in the snow. In the dry they were a noticeable step below the stock Conti tires in terms of grip and stability, if you pushed them.

225/40R-18 Pirelli Sotozero 3 on 18x8 Sport Edition U2.

At least it looks relatively inoffensive.

Driving in the snow with the X-Ice was a breeze. I felt safe driving with these during the two winter seasons I've had them. I purchased my set from Tirerack, and the wheels have no clearance issues whatsoever. My only issue driving the car wasn't related to the wheels/tires, just that my car is lowered so the front bumper acts as a snow plow during deep snow storms.

I hope that pic wasn't from today! We did get snow yesterday here, though, if only a dusting.

I got the 235/45/18 - hakkapeliitta 9's studded. On TRX OE wheels. Just mounted them today. This will be my first winter / year with the car.

Im up in northwest Canada and we had some decent rain and snow today. Joy.. right before halloween....These things have some serious grip. I found a open parking lot to toss it around. The limited slip does it's job, along with the tires. I would hope so for the coinage I had to drop. But you get what you pay for.

like post above I'm just worried about plowing the streets for free with the body kit. I tried to get maximum tire profile to lift it a bit. Time will tell. !

These are obscenely expensive because they are coded L. This is the front snow tire for a Lamborghini Huracan. Very low production numbers = very high price. I can’t imagine driving in a true winter weather state on 20” wheels. First major pothole at a thaw out and you’ve got a big repair bill.

The worst part about snow is getting out of the driveway. Even when the plow guy comes and clears it, the town plow will come by and create a Yankee version of the Great Wall right across the mouth of the driveway. I've gotten high-centered on that sucker before (in a Golf), and it's usually too big to bull through with a low-slung car. I will sometimes take my wife's SUV though and crunch through, then go back and get my car. Heh.

EDIT: Had about three inches of snow the other day, which is now gone. But for a couple of days, it was below freezing with snow on the roads, and the car did great. First winter I've had Pirelli snow tires, but they did very well.
