Long ago, I had snow tires without wheels. Every fall, a tire mechanic would unmount the summer tires, then mount snow tires on the car's OEM aluminum wheels. I found that you can only install and remove a tire so many times before it leaks. My car was rear wheel drive, and I was really disappointed to get two flat tires in one week when the temperature dropped near zero. The tires just did not seal well after being installed and removed multiple times. Is it a bad idea to install snow tires on the OEM wheels?
This year, I bought four winter tires and four steel wheels, just so I won't have those cold temperature flats.
For a type R, using smaller wheels will let you use a tire with a higher sidewall, which will do better at surviving potholes You can also get a narrower tire that should work better in snow. But don't give up too much in overall diameter, because in the snow you want to have as much ground clearance as possible.
