I didn't find any major negative effects from going down to an 18" wheel. I think the whole torque steer internet myth is way over played, the car didn't torque steer on stock wheels and doesn't torque steer on 18's. The slight, and I mean slight loss of steering feel is only nitpicky noticeable on initial turn in, but the increased level of grip, better ride quality, and far better protection for the wheels offset any perceived loss of feel.My preference is stock wheels with better tires at the oem size(PS4S) because smaller wheels increase torque steer and thicker sidewall tires harm the directness of the steering. The stock Type R is already a masterclass in handling and I don't want to muck it up.
The cost of replacing wheels if damage occurs is a cost I'm willing to pay.
