What is this hole for?

I am considering using the area above the console storage to put a round plate that I can then suction cup a phone holder to.
My question is can I cover this hole/opening? Does anyone know what it is there for?

jokes aside, no idea. Looks similar to where a transmission lockout would’ve been.

Yea, LOL.
It would not hold much.
My fingertip just fits in the opening for reference. It's a small opening.

In another thread someone mentioned certain trims have a light in that cubby. The sport doesn’t so I’m going to use that as a spot to add a small LED like my WRX had.
