Hello Civic friends --
I'm about to do my first oil change on my new Civic 1.5T. Just wondering what oil do yall recommend? I'm not talking about 0W-20 vs 5W-30, etc.... Since oil is pretty much the life blood of the engine, I'm curious to know what brand is recommended, or am I wasting time and over-thinking things? I've narrowed it down to the following two:
  • Valvoline Full Synthetic for Modern Engines
Honda Civic 10th gen What brand motor oil do yall recommend? 0007413003544_0_A1C1_1200
  • Castrol Edge Full Synthetic Forumulated for GDI engines
Honda Civic 10th gen What brand motor oil do yall recommend? a64a4483-577b-47c3-9168-6efe6f6495f1_1.ef2bf8396730fa5f53e6bec3d50745f2

The reason I'm going with either of these two is because they are marketed to be "specifically" for GDI engines.... and figured with all the controversy of oil dilution and/or carbon buildup, I'd look for motor oil that caters specifically to GDI engines.... or these companies are just great at marketing. Thoughts please?

I currently run Valvoline Modern Engine 5w30 In summer. Itā€™s an extremely thin 30 grade, not much thicker than Redline 0w20.
Mobil 1 0w20 in winter

Most are fine but I use Pennzoil Ultra Platinum. Going to switch to Platinum my next change since itā€™s much cheaper and itā€™s hard to find Ultra.
I am glad that I got it for $28 for 5qts. now it's $60+ on amazon. From next time i will go with amsoil SS as NOACK factor of Pennzoil is not that great

I have not same engine than you, I use Penzol Platinum always on sale at less than $26US for 5 quarts at my local store.
IMO any good brand will do the job. Most important change oil moire often the less.

a few years back on my last car I decided to go for the annual oil change interval as I drive 8-10k miles a year and that vehicle takes like 7 quarts so I spent far to much time researching oils and filters on websites like bobistheoilguy.com and even some Project Farm videos on Youtube and some other websites I found along the way, ultimately I settled on the Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic and Royal Purple filters, if i'm unable to source an RP filter i'll use the K&N one. These filters are based on what i've seen the best out there, a super close backup to these is the Mobil 1 Extended Performance filter.

I used Mobil One 0w-20 for my 2016 1.5T Touring.
I just traded the '16 model at 97.5K miles and had zero engine / turbo problems over the life of the car.
I traded for a 2020 version of the same car and fully intend to continue using the Mobil One product.

I will say, being extra cautious because of the turbo, I never let the oil life monitor drop below 40%..

Iā€™m a Mobil guy for the newer cars Iā€™ve owned. Valvoline is my second choice, however I mainly used their high mileage blend for my old high mileage cars. I wouldnā€™t hesitate to use that valvoline youā€™re looking into.

Somewhat related question - i'm planning on doing my next scheduled oil change since I'm home and bored. Is it best to use the Honda OEM filter? If so, where do you suggest buying them? If not, what other brands do you use for the filter? Thanks!
