So, I have had success uploading an individual wallpaper to the info screen, but have not had any luck importing - following the correct steps, I never have a Clock/Wallpaper Type option.... but now, I have something new to try:

Aha. Not "Display Audio". My theory is no good then. In '16 Sedans with Display Audio, IIRC, the alternate skin and user wallpapers don't mix. Hopefully somebody else has a better answer for you. Sorry.
I use the alternate screen (the tile-style). So, I am going to revert back to the default layout, see if I can import, and then whether or not that will "travel" back with me when I go back to the tiles... Will update....

Oh, and Dick W? you may have apologized for not helping the other person, but I am hoping it may work for me! :)

... and that was it. You can change the background on either style of layout by accessing the USB that has the files in the root directory, but you can only import your own images to retain in the head unit's memory if you are using the default background. I tried uploading under Default and then switch to Tile, but still could not access... Ah well.... Thanks again for your help, Dick W!

You have to upload it from USB drive

Import wallpaper
You can import up to five images, one at a time, for wallpaper from a USB flash
drive.
1. Connect the USB flash drive to the USB
port.
2 USB Port(s) P. 199
2. Select Settings.
3. Select Clock.
4. Select Clock/Wallpaper Type, then open
the Wallpaper tab.
5. Select Add New.
u The picture name is displayed on the list.
6. Select a desired picture.
u The preview is displayed on the left side
on the screen.
7. Select Start Import to save the data.
u The display will return to the wallpaper

• When importing wallpaper files, the image must be
in the USB flash drive’s root directory.
Images in a folder cannot be imported.
• The file name must be fewer than 64 characters.
• The file format of the image that can be imported
is BMP (bmp) or JPEG (jpg).
• The individual file size limit is 5 MB.
• The maximum image size is 4,096 × 4,096 pixels. If
the image size is less than 800 Ă— 480 pixels, the
image is displayed in the middle of the screen with
the extra area appearing in black.
• If the USB flash drive does not have any pictures,
the No files detected message appears.
for whatever reason, it doesnt work at all!

pictures of less than 5mb are saved in .jpg format in the root folder, but none appear

and i tried on both usb connections, wtf?

edit:
solved, had to use a FAT32 usb stick

Was just going to post a tip for people and this stated it. Format of the USB needs to be correct, usually FAT32. Other SD cards in sticks or that type of thing might not work right. Anything over 32gb doesn't seem to recognize very well or at all.

Alternatively, if you hold down on an empty part of the screen. It will display a secondary menu to set the wallpaper as well.
So mine use to do this, but now it's saying there are no pictures in the gallery. Do you know if there is a setting that I need to play with

Just made the changes and well I'm a gamer so I used zoom backgrounds that Sega released within the past year. They actually work well. Only issue with the second one with the Sega Genesis logo is that the top bar of the menu doesn't change it cuts off the "Sega" part of the logo.

**I had to keep the USB stick inserted to get the images to show up using the secondary menu to set the wallpaper.
