Veloster N does not compete with the Type R!

If you're wondering why there aren't videos between the Si and N, it's because the Si is a direct competitor to the Veloster rspec model. Both are advertised at around ~200hp and are considered "sporty" compact cars. Throttle house has a pretty good video comparing the two.

Despite C&D's lightning lap results and some of the company the Si keeps, the specs sheet keep it out of the N and R's class as far as consumer reviews go. I do think an Si with the tsp stage 1 tune will be pretty close (if not better) than a base N though. Just gotta get an exhaust to match....

I agree with that. I think the si is a much more polished car, even with it's lagging numbers. There's no reason not to put a stage 1 tune on the car day 1. It's just too good and so cheap and easy. Then down the rabbit hole of stage 2 then clutch and intake and exhaust. Three thousand later and you have a car that beats the brakes off the competition. Really love the si on stage 2.

It competes with the likes of the Si, GTI, WRX. Recently car reviewers like The Straight Pipes, and Redline Reviews have done a direct comparison with the Type R and I just dont get it. Its price point and performance numbers show that the N is swimming against the tide upstream. For example it has been dynoed to show a max output stock to the wheels of 215hp and 236lb ft of torque. Those numbers are not too far off from the Si (204hp, 212lb ft), and is worst than the WRX and GTI. In fact according to Motortrend, it is only about half a second faster to 60 and finishes the quater mile only half a second faster than its little sibling the R-Spec. It also struggles against the GTI, and WRX to 60 and in the quater mile. The Si is also only about a half second behind. Now, all of these stats are the N with the Performance Pack, the base N will be most likely even stevens with the rest of this field. So please stop with these over hyped fan fare with the Veloster N and keep it in its lane.

Dude sorry to burst the bubble. Unless you have a dynosheet of a SI on that same dyno shop you can't say that it will make 204whp on that same dyno.

The GTI great numbers are with dual clutch. Manual GTIs are slower with a acceleration similar to the Veloster. Also the GTIs are underrated from the factory that is common knowledge.
WRX is AWD and their acceleration numbers from a dig will normally be amazing for the power it has.

It competes with the Type R but obviously the Type R is a better package.

It's not being marketed as a Type R competitor by Hyundai. It slots above the Si and GTI but below the Golf R and Type R. It's a very fine effort by Hyundai for the price.

Btw, I've checked out all the dyno runs posted online and most get considerably more that what you posted. This one shows 236hp at the wheels and 260tq at the wheels...

I'll still smoke that thing in my 10th gen easily. Put 2 busses on a wrx yesterday

Sooo. I just test drove a Veloster N today and WOW! Called a Hyundai dealership and asked if there was an N available and if I could test drive one, and they say yeah come on down. I get there and there is a Veloster N Performance Pack and a Veloster N base model. The dealership wouldn't budge on letting me test drive the Performance Pack without atleast running my credit and talking numbers but were willing to let me drive the Base N. Disappointed, I begrudginly agreed and boy was I wrong to be dissapointed. I have driven alot of cars, from a Kia Stinger, to a G70, Grand Sport, 1SS, STI, the new 181hp Miata, BRZ, heck even a Lamborghini Gallardo, you name it, and aside from the Lambo this was the most fun car out of all of them. I couldn't (and still can't stop) thinking about it. Even in its base form, it is a magnificent machine. The exhaust is phenomenal, the steering is heavy and communicative, the acceleration is nice and linear. I was never a Hyundai guy, and probably never would be, but this car would be an exception. Now I know this thread is about the N and the Type R, but since I still havent driven a Type R I want to directly compare the Base N to my Si.

Acceleration: Veloster N- The Base N felt more linear but the Si's boost hits harder but still I think the N would pull on the Si top end.

Steering: Veloster N- It had more weight to it than the Si on N mode and felt slightly more direct and precise.

Braking: Civic Si- The Si's brake feels more confidence inspiring and the bite point is stellar. The N's is good, bite point a little too vague and travel a little harder to modulate.

Sound: Veloster N- Enough said!

Clutch: Civic Si- This was probably the easiest victory for the Si. While the Si's clutch is super soft and vague, the N's clutch is crazy springy and abrupt in its travel with an incredibly numb engagement point. In fact I stalled twice back to back which embarrased me a bit.

Throttle response: Veloster N- Nearly instantanious, and spacing for heel toe is much better than the Si.

Engine: Veloster N- sounds great, pulls very well, and much more linear.

Gear Box: Civic Si- The N's gear box was very good, short travel, engagement is very predictable and precise. Notchy in a very sporty way, but I still think it falls short to the Si. The Si's engagement is a little more precise, throw feels the same to me, but I feel more confident in the way the Si falls into each gear.

Handling: Civic Si: Again this is the base N. The Si felt more tossable, its just that simple. Even though I didnt really drive the N that long or push it in a sharp enough turn, I could feel that the Si would handle better, it just felt more light on its feet. Plus the open diff in the N.

Overall: Veloster N: I think even in its base form, the N is a better performance machine than the Si. It felt more raw (admittedly I'm sure the exhaust had a lot to do with it), and for a performance car enthusiasts, no doubt the N would put a bigger smile on your face, and this is coming from arguably the biggest Si guy from this forum. What a machine!

As much as I now know the N is a beast and probably could make the swap if I wanted, I still wont trade the Si. She still dazzles even after 2 years, and still puts a smile on my face. The N is like the hot new girl you have a crush on, but the Si is that soul mate you met in high school and have loved ever since, yea she isnt the hottest now with all these new younger more athletic women showing up, but she still amazes you even after all these years. Not letting go of her anytime soon, but I can still dream of the other "woman"

While it's great we have accessible cars like the Veloster N competing in the sports FWD class of vehicles, the fuel economy leaves a lot to be desired compared to the Si. At 25mpg combined and under 300hp, it doesn't make sense to me. A Camaro V6 1LE or Mustang Ecoboost PP seem like a much better compromise in slight practicality to have equivalent fuel economy and more power, while also being RWD platforms.

If I remember right the statistics are based on the costs of repairs. Not necessarily how long the engine/trans will last.

I have to admit, reading through this thread, I really wasn't a fan of xbbnx. But you were right, you were being objective. Your review of the N was awesome and you did a great job, eloquently explaining the differences and similarities. I am very impressed.
