Upgrading width of tires on stock wheels

Sorry if this upsets people. Just a quick dumb question.

Can I upsize my tires on stock wheels?

I have a 215/50/17 on a 17x7 stock touring wheels and would like to run wider wheels.

Looking into 225/235 45/50 /17 maybe?

I want the most safest and conservative option that won't comprise the ride too much. I'm guessing that would be 215/50/17?

The next best fit for 17” oem wheel is 235/45R17. Anything wider than this will need a wider wheel.
