Holdin Pressure; 10th Gen Civic Coolant Tank Design Pt. 2

HELLO AND WELCOME TO PART 2 OF OUR DESIGN BLOG SERIES FOR OUR 10TH GENERATION HONDA CIVIC COOLANT TANK UPGRADE. IN PART ONE OF THIS SERIES WE SHARED SEVERAL PICTURES OF THE OEM TANK FOUND IN YOUR RIDE AND DESCRIBED THE PURPOSE OF THE COOLANT TANK (WHAT IT DOES AND WHY YOU NEED IT).

In this blog we share more detail on this little container and show you how we are going to add some flare while retaining its function.

First, let's talk about the material. We mentioned in part one that the unit would be metal but did not go into specifics. Most metal aftermarket performance parts are steel or aluminum. In this case aluminum was the clear choice. It’s cost-effective, readily available, and easy to bend into our desired shape.

INTEGRITY. THE COOLANT TANK IS UNDER A CONSTANT PRESSURE OF UPWARDS OF 1.3 BAR WHEN OPERATING. BECAUSE OF THIS, WE NEED TO MAKE SURE THIS TANK IS UP TO THE TASK.

CAD design and 3D modeling are used to create a shape that gives us a bit more coolant volume and is structurally sound. All the pieces come together with TIG welds for maximum strength and are then leak tested for worry free performance.

WHEN YOU LOOK AT VARIOUS AFTERMARKET COOLANT TANKS YOU’LL NOTICE THAT MOST HAVE A PLASTIC TUBE ON THE SIDE TO CHECK COOLANT LEVEL OR A SIGHT GLASS.

Now in principle, the concept is sound. It provides an easy and simple way to check the coolant level.

However, we can’t tell you how many times we’ve seen the tubes start leaking. The plastic part of the tube cannot take the heat and over time gets soft and leaks. The sight glasses are often too small and cloud over making them nearly useless.

For this reason, we decided to ditch the plastic and glass and provide you with a dipstick to check coolant levels. This works just like checking the oil in your engine. This is a stylish piece that you can keep on your keychain or on the tank so it's accessible at a moment’s notice. It will come clearly marked to show you if your tank is low or just right. This approach ensures there are less possible points the tank can leak and gives a good clean look, which let’s face it, is part of the reason to upgrade your coolant tank.

Our team is exploring various designs that give that signature 27WON look under the hood. You already know we are going to finish the part off with a nice powder coat for durability and to match the 27WON engine bay shrouds.

WE GOT SAMPLES ON CARS AND ARE RACKING UP THE MILES ON THESE TANKS TO MAKE THEM BULLET PROOF. LET US KNOW BELOW IN THE COMMENTS BELOW WHAT YOU THINK.
