Hello guys,

Around Christmas this year, my fiancee and I will be driving out to Yosemite from LA (about 5 hours). There will definitely be snow in the area during this time of year. I'm currently on the stock wheel and tire set up.

Do you guys have any recommendations for driving in the snow while I'm up there? Are chains okay/recommended when needed? I know that snow tires are probably the safest bet but I heard they're not good for driving long distances without snow (ie: driving on the highway to get to Yosemite)?

Thanks for any input in advance!

The R is no different than a Civic - in that area if it snows you'll need at least a good set of All-Seasons if not Ice & Snow - chains shouldn't be used on the 20" wheels, downsize to 18s is recommended. When I visited Yosemite at Thanksgiving, in 1970, the back (Eastern exit) already had 12 feet of snow and the road had closed for the Winter; the valley was clear & dry but the backroads were already slippery.
