Hey guys and gals. If you have a LX with a 6 spd manual and 2.0L...try chopping the muffler from the axle back. Sounds pretty damn awesome!!!

Considering OP is in CA, http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/displaycode?section=veh&group=27001-28000&file=27150-27159

VEHICLE CODE
SECTION 27150-27159

27150. (a) Every motor vehicle subject to registration shall at all
times be equipped with an adequate muffler in constant operation and
properly maintained to prevent any excessive or unusual noise, and
no muffler or exhaust system shall be equipped with a cutout, bypass,
or similar device.
(b) Except as provided in Division 16.5 (commencing with Section
38000) with respect to off-highway motor vehicles subject to
identification, every passenger vehicle operated off the highways
shall at all times be equipped with an adequate muffler in constant
operation and properly maintained so as to meet the requirements of
Article 2.5 (commencing with Section 27200), and no muffler or
exhaust system shall be equipped with a cutout, bypass, or similar
device.

It's illegal... Quit trying to rebuttal everyone else's comments saying that it's bad. Judging by the cars you own on your profile. 98 Civic Dx (turbo/Blown), 98 Civic Ex (Blown), 87 CRX HF. I can see how you would have bias towards a muffler delete or heavy modifications.

Now, OP can do whatever he wants (because it's his car) and post it and I commend him for actually trying a modification. However, I'm laying down the facts and saying that this is bad.

Am I not allowed to rebut things now? Is this not America anymore?

FYI the Ex was 100% stock. My current truck and DD are 100% stock (minus springs and cosmetic stuff). You're just a Judgey McJudgerson!

"adequate muffler" is the key phrase. If you take a look at Article 2.5 it specifies dB levels as the objective metric (95 dB being the threshold). If this vehicle maintains a level under that (I would bet you 50 bucks it will...95 dB is on par with a jackhammer) then you are within legal limits and can obtain a Certificate of Compliance from a state ref.

As long as this is nothing more than a muffler delete - and there is still a resonator on the vehicle - OP will be just fine.

A straight piped vehicle will almost always be over 95 dB. Maybe not at idle but while driving it will be.

Straight piped probably, but cutting off your muffler isn't the same as a straight pipe.

If there is not another resonator or muffler then it's probably going to be over the 95 db's.
