Comparison Post with OEM, Hybrid Racing, Acuity Instruments full shifter assemblies.

This is not a thread on which shifter assembly is better, but more of a little informative post which hopefully can help you decide what you would like.

So, I have gone through a couple of different combinations of shifter setups in the last 2 years. First as everyone of course the OEM and we all know the amount of spacing/travel isn't the greatest.

I had upgraded to the 18-19 Type R shifter assembly as it is relatively inexpensive and added all the Acuity bits to it. It was a great upgrade over Stock. After some time I was getting used to it so decided it is time for a full shifter assembly. I wanted to be able to adjust the Height which you couldn't do with the OEM.

As many of you know, myself and @CanadiaegeanBlue (Humza) before @Unity Performance came into affect have been pretty close. We set out to build our cars with quality parts but being different at the same time. Humza had the Acuity Full assembly installed in his so after driving it I was pretty much sold that I wanted it. At the time funds were tight and word came around that Hybrid Racing was in the process of releasing a short shifter at a lower cost. Knowing the history of Hybrid Racing I said I would go that route and we can compare the two setups.

I got one of the Red Launch edition shifters when it first came out, installed it and immediately fell in love with it. Shifter felt almost like OEM feel with shorter throws and just the overall design. I loved it. Awesome shifter for the price and build quality is very good.

Little over a year later I decided it's time to switch to Acuity as I still loved the tighter feel of the shifter. Those that know old school Honda's with the rod shifter linkages thats how the Acuity feels to me. It does take a little more effort as everything is tighter BUT the feel is amazing. Acuity shifter has a lot more adjustability compared to all the other one's which reflects in Acuity's price tag.

I had switched out to a wooden 50gram shift knob pictured below and you really feel the shifts as it feels more mechanical rather than assisted compared to a weighted knob.

Pricing lowest to highest would be: Acuity Add-ons > Hybrid-Racing > Acuity Instruments

I personally enjoy the Acuity a lot more because of the shift feel but having access to both I was able to really compare the two.

CONS:
Hybrid-Racing
- I didn't like here was how the shifter cable mounted to the lower shift rod on the shifter. The factory cable had to be twisted 90 degrees and mounted Vertical you will see the picture below. (There was no issues with doing this and putting almost 50,000km on the car) Just personal preference
- One other thing I didn't like about the Hybrid-Racing shifter is to adjust the gate spacing or throw distance you had to unbolt the mount and move it to the other hole and tighten it. You can see in the pictures the 2 adjustment holes for each.

Acuity Instruments
- Only thing that I didn't like about the Acuity is that it lacked the mounting points for the factory harness tabs that run along the center console to keep it secure in place, however that isn't something that would cause any issues.

Onto Pictures below:

Acuity Instruments > Hybrid-Racing > OEM (No addons)

You can seen in the picture below and the 2 following pictures about the points for the shifter cable. Acuity is like oem and Hybrid-Racing requires you to turn the cable 90 degrees.

Here you can see the factory harness having no where to latch onto for the Acuity. (Overall not an issue just personal preference as mentioned)

Hope this information helps you decide what you want, I personally am really enjoying the Acuity shifter and would definitely recommend it.

Also to note the 2020 Type R shifter assembly is a shorter throw than the previous generation so just putting that out there if you wish to go with the Acuity Add-ons instead.

Acuity Products and Wooden shift knob can be purchased through www.unity-performance.com

I haven't done much due to winter haha but I did get my hands on a set of MSD coil packs, I have a few fellow local guys that run these and have said good things. Although I have seen a few negative reviews I decided to try them out.

The install is straight forward, remove the 10mm bolts holding the coil packs down and remove old packs.

New packs you have the shave the connector slot on the coils I provided a picture and then simply bolt it down. 10mm bolts should be bolted down to 9ft lbs.

First impression, car drove noticeable smoother, exhaust note has decreased, much more responsive. Considering my car is full bolt on with @Vincent@27WON I figured this would give me some good gains. I'll report back on them in a while once I drive the car more frequently. Overall impressed with these so far.

You can get these through @Unity Performance.

Www.Hirevsports.com, I don't have wiring diagrams I did it all on my own. You have to de pin your wiring harness to pull it out and re pin once re assembled. They do have an instructions posted so you can check that out.

Here is a few pictures from the process.

Looking good!

I am planning on sourcing used side mirrors and switches from japan but I don't know if and what the extra cables will be needed.

I am planning to use the JDM left side mirror assy directly, but I will put motor into USDM/CDN DM right side mirror so that I can retain the blind side camera.

I have already got JDM used mirror switch with folding button, but still looking for reasonable priced used mirrors. So far the left mirror I have found on JDM civics seems to all have 8pins, including turn signal. not sure what extra wires will be needed to work with my sport touring lol.

I wouldn't recommend putting a RHD mirror assembly onto a LHD car. The angle of the mirror is different as the driver sits on the opposite side.

The HiRev kit is only 200usd and it comes with with button as well.

Yes I understand the mirror difference RHD and LHD, I have the same sequence blue mirror installed right now as well. So I will re use those mirrors if I get JDM mirrors.

It's not the mirrors that's the difference it's the actually light housing that's different angle. I wouldn't recommend putting rhd housing on a lhd car. Has nothing to do with the mirrors itself.

Flood lights!

Here is my latest project... still need to run the wiring but I cut out the panels and mounted the light housing!

Some of you have seen this....and finally decided to do the wiring yesterday.

Here is the final product. The wiring is tied into the door switch harness. When door opens it turns on...when you close it shuts off...If door is open and you press the door switch you can see it fade off with the rest of the lighting.

The wiring was fished through both front door grommets so no wires are exposed.

Acuity Pedal Spacer

Honda Civic 10th gen Thuseefc - Mugen Si 20210302_150440

I didnt disconnect the pedal connector and just let it hang and moved the pedal aside as I worked.

I removed the 3 (12mm) bolts and moved pedal aside.

I used setting B

I found Setting C there was a bit low And found setting A a little too high for my liking.

Overall impression:

My car has 82,000 km. So my foot was used to the lower gas pedal position and when I started driving with the higher pedal my foot felt awkward getting on the brakes because naturally I started lifting higher.

However as I started getting accustomed to the difference it started feeling great, so easy to heel toe as well. Also looks a lot better being all level with the rest of the pedals!

Definitely a must do for the tracker/spirited driver!
