From the looks of that damage, the rear axle looks bent or snapped. Suspension is definitely toast. Insurance company is most likely going to total the car.

Most important thing is you don't seem to be hurt. Car can be repaired or replaced

I order to total I has to be more in repair than your cars worth. It doesn't look like 30000 worth of damage. But if the frame is bent it could be enough to total it. Sorry this happened.

I dunno how it works in the US, but that damage likely isn't as extensive as it looks.

The lower control arm gave up on the outside end which means there was unlikely to have been any damage further in. It defo needs a lower control arm, new shock, new wheel etc from the mechanical side.

It'll obviously need a door but the rear quarter doesn't look beyond repair, at least from what we can see. The cill might have taken a bit of a beating so that could need work, but the total cost wouldn't be anywhere near the value of the car.

Shame to see it like this though. I hope you get everything sorted out without too much hassle.

Having just went through this process (on my truck, not my civic), here is what the insurance company will do:

All these numbers are just for example, insurance will get real quotes on all this.

Car value right now if not damaged: 30,000
Car value right now in damaged condition: 18,000

If the repairs get near 12,000, they will total the car since it is cheaper to cut you a check for 30k and then sell the car for 18k (insurance is only out 12k in totaled out example here).

If estimated repairs are under 10k, they will definitely repair it since it is cheaper than the 12k (in this example).

There are other safety issues that go into the decision but the main reason is $$$. The quotes on repairs are almost lower than what they really end up being because its hard to estimate the damage until you start tearing into the car. This is why if the repair estimate gets close to (normal value - current damage value) they will total.

Good luck and I hope you don't loose too much money on this unfortunate situation.

I used to live in Columbus Ohio!

I have learned that FL and OH are a bit different with insurance. Florida is an 80% state. So if the repairs are less than say..... 20-25k my car will be fixed. Provided there is no frame damage..... That will be the kicker...

I think they'll total it. I don't think they sell shocks in pairs of 1, they're gonna order the entire expensive set of electronic shocks. Hopefully the dealership charges out the ass so it can be totaled and you get a new car.

Edit: paint, door, brakes, control arm, shocks, rear bumper, maybe fender damage? I've dealt with a lot of totalled cars in my family (unfortunately) and I can easily see this damage going way over 12 k from the dealership repairs
