I switched to Amsoil 5w30. Been on it for about 2k miles with no issues.

The reason I switched is because its starting to get hot down here in GA and I'm pushing a lot more power than stock. I drained the 0w20 oil after about 1.5k miles on it and it already had the viscosity of water almost.

I just want to make sure everything stays lubricated with the increased heat.

I run 5w30 in hot California summer months, but I also made sure to choose a 5w30 on the thinner side of the spec, Valvoline Modern Engine 5w30 runs a kinematic viscosity of 9.8cSt@100°c

for reference, a thick 20 grade like Redline 0w20 has a kinematic viscosity of 9.1cSt@100°c, and the SAE threshold between 20 grade and 30 grade is 9.3cSt@100°c

Oh no, not another oil thread. All I can say is people have opinions not based in science, so I will refrain from adding advice. If you search this forum, you will find that this issue had been litigated to no end

The only thing I can advice you to do is on your next oil change, send a sample to one of the trusted oil Labs for analysis, and if it shows excessive wear and breakdown, it's not the right oil. If it shows normal wear and normal breakdown, then it's the correct viscosity

Im in SoCal so heat picks up. Plus id have to wait 1 week for 0w-20 & im runnning low on oil.

Three reasons to switch
1. Ethanol
2. Adding more than half hp
3. Hard track days

good read up check it I just swapped to 5-30 today myself
I mean im not pushing ethanol yet but i just have a basemap tune from ktuner & an 3” intake. I do live in SoCal so it does get hot. I ask because my oil company is short on 0w-20 & itll take up to a week & im already low as it is. Thats where the idea of 5w-30 came into mind. I do plan to go higher on HP & TQ soon so thought of the chance to jump higher.

If it’s truly that hot it won’t kill you to swap I wouldn’t make a huge deal of it

Running Amsoil Oil signature series 0w-20 with ethanol blend, sent my oil (it was the second oil change) to Blackstone. The oil had 5,600Miles on it, no added quarts of oil. Besides a 1.8 fuel % There was no issue running 0w-20 in SoCal (Los Angeles County)

Mpg is going to drop forsure. Your going to feel a difference in throttle reponse, it decreses big time due to more friction. I wouldnt recomend going 5w-30 since your still on 91. Im running Amsoil SS 0w-30

5w30 and 0w30 are basically the same viscosity at operating temp

i ran castrol synthetic 5w30 in my 2017 si for a good 10k miles (2 oil changes in between) during hot texas summer last year. Had no issues, car felt the same. I had ktuner 19/23 base tune on mine as well. sounded quieter on start up and idle as well.

You know once both oils are up to temp, they are the same viscosity right? 0w30 and 5w30 is such a negligible difference you won’t feel it, not to the very extreme you describe. You’re describing something much more vast of a change like 0w20 vs 15w40

trust me i know, i have done it before i tried it, i felt a difference big time. Ow30 is way thinner then 5w30. Of course when the oil reaches operating temp it goes up in viscosity thats the why its better because when parts get hot they expand so of course you wont feel a difference between 0w20 to 0w30 but 0w20 to 5w30 is a big jump. when i was using 5w30 cold start idled lower then with 0w and it required more throttle when i was driving
