lets face it, this gen civic does not hold value like before. my hb is barely 3 years old, 41k miles an is worth less than 50% of the msrp (29k)

so this cars really worth 13,000 which is a shame especially my mileage.

by the time im ready to buy a passport in 2 years, id be lucky if its worth 5,000

The cheapest hatch on Carvana right now (at least near me) is a '17 LX priced at 19k with 26k miles. There's a '17 EX-L with 46k miles priced at 20.3k. Where are you seeing that your car is only worth 13k?

So your 4 year old (based on MY release), undesirable model (Not something enthusiasts want and are dime a dozen), average mileage car lost 50% of its value. Seems about right to me. Cars are depreciating assets, never buy one assuming a certain resale.

That makes no sense. I have a 2017 EX-T sedan with about 35k miles, good condition, and is estimated to be worth between $14-15k.

I know that can be frustrating. I tell ya though it seems like the Civic Si doesn't depreciate hardly at all. Low mileage 17's still going for well over 20K even though their original MSRP was 23,900. It's crazy. At the price they are asking for those used ones it simply makes better sense to buy new.

MSRP, HAHAHAHAHAHAHA, who uses MSRP to determine value change? My Brothers Wife bought the car that is now my Civic new for under 22k and similar civics used with similar mileage are selling for 15k today, forget MSRP, it's what people ACTUALLY PAID for the car, if you paid MSRP you are a fool.

Mine is actually doing better then the typical depreciation curve that you can see here https://retireby40.org/dont-pay-depreciation/ Also welcome to what happens when you buy a new car, they loose value FAST those first few years then the rate of value loss slows, it's a CURVE not a LINE.

Is the exl really a 29k MSRP? Are you including taxes and destination? I thought they were about 24 for MSRP on an exl.

Your dealer trade in might be 13k, but you can sell it for more than that. Get a CR-Z, then you'll know depreciation.

Ah, therein lies the rub...
The value of the car is 19k...that's what they go for, that's what finance companies will loan on, and that's what a customer paid.
So....when I bought my new 2019 Ex sedan in March of this year, I paid 21,500. It's cheaper for me to buy new when you negotiate a good purchase price. New car, full warranty, 0 miles, no junk add ons, no F&I warranties. The other close one was a new 2018 ex-t for 22200.00

Folks will say it''s wise to buy a 1 to 3 year old used car to avoid new car depreciation, but that is often NOT the case.
In December 2014 I bought my wife's new 2014 Prius for 21% off MSRP. Negotiated with three dealers: end of model year, 2015s already in stock. So I got about $ 6k off. Couldn't beat the value. Couldnt get a used one at that new car sale price.
Sometimes you just have to pounce at the right time.
