I don't think he saying he paid 29K necessarily but that it was valued at that price for MSRP, to be fair. The 2020 is valued at 25.3k on the Honda site so must have dealer add ons to reach that figure, or the price came down from 2017.

That makes no sense. I have a 2017 EX-T sedan with about 35k miles, good condition, and is estimated to be worth between $14-15k.
I recently assisted with the sale of a 2017 EX-T 6MT with 71k miles and it sold for $15k. I don't think the market is as bad as what the OP implies.

It's definitely not. First of all my SO got a sport touring hatch for like $26k, so there's no way an EX-L ever cost $29k unless you added a bunch of stupid stuff that no one asked for and has no true value. My local dealer charges like $500 to have all weather mats and a cargo mat when the cost at college hills is like $200 tops lol. Second of all, looking up an EX-L with his specs comes out to like 15k. Are they depreciating? Yeah. But from what im seeing it's not any worse than any other car on the market.

lets face it, this gen civic does not hold value like before. my hb is barely 3 years old, 41k miles an is worth less than 50% of the msrp (29k)

so this cars really worth 13,000 which is a shame especially my mileage.

by the time im ready to buy a passport in 2 years, id be lucky if its worth 5,000

My 95 civic didn’t hold its value at all. It was a piece of crap.

The cheapest hatch on Carvana right now (at least near me) is a '17 LX priced at 19k with 26k miles. There's a '17 EX-L with 46k miles priced at 20.3k. Where are you seeing that your car is only worth 13k?
Perhaps it's the one he didn't scroll through the photos that shows the other side of the car is caved in. :p

Seriously though, I do see most in the range of 22,000-23,000 CAD (16,600-17,300 USD) with 30,000-60,000 kms (18,600-37,200) on them. I'd have to say I'm seeing relative prices - nothing is anywhere near as low as 13k USD except for one that is (12,300) 16,600 CAD, but has almost 80,000kms (49,700 miles) on it

"It'll buff out"

Actually did see a hatch with under 3k miles on it with the back totally caved in going for like 7k on Craigslist a few months ago.

Wow, I wonder if they failed to report it to insurance. Usually it's auctioned off by insurance when it's written off.

I suppose it's possible it was purchased like that and instead of fixing it they went to flip it. I didn't even think about that part of it. The hatch portion still worked, but the bumper was destroyed and the hatch was dented to clarify it a bit.

That's a great point, really. But I thought they may fix and flip, not just flip it busted up, but it could explain why it's being sold as it is. :)

Now that Ford and GM have left the compact car market, our Hondas' depreciation might slow quite a bit.

Actually, you may not have to sell your totaled car to the insurance co. You can collect the smaller amount that they would still pay (the fair market value of the car before wrecked, minus the wholesale price of the wreck) and keep the wrecked car. The wrecked car might bring more $$$ than the wholesale price the insurance would pay, but you have to sell it yourself, either as a whole or as parts.

well let me correct myself: the price at 29k was with add ons, mark up and taxes. I didnt get much off the car. That said, was 26k with tax, tags, title here in VA. Dealer fees were at 700 or so. i had 17k to put down (insurance and 6k cash).

Im tempted to upgrade to the 2020/21 model because my screen STILL beeps and goes to the home screen and i am out of warranty.

Might have been more to fix it than planned as well, so selling it as is would have been less effort. Or as gruber said, they figured they could flip the wreck after taking the insurance payment as well.

only thing I can say is they saw you coming....
You overpaid new, and got ripped on the quoted sale price unless you really abused the hell out of the car. The attached used price chart is pretty accurate from my experience, a clean used Honda in SoCal can get a premium trade in price.

Honda Civic 10th gen these cars do not hold value as they did before 1446CB84-E77E-45FF-BB3D-F3B1675B54FB
