With all the hype surrounding the newly released turbochargers from multiple companies, I thought it would be beneficial to have a thread that encompasses the different options for the FK8 platform to promote good technical discussions.

I know that a lot of us (including myself) are very interested and eager to see real world results on all the different turbochargers! I highly encourage anybody with a non-factory turbocharger to leave feedback and experiences that will help guide members in the community towards making an educated decision on which unit fits their needs best!

Disclaimer! I think it goes without saying that one of the biggest limiting factors for our cars is fueling, and that to make the most out of any of these units, its going to require additional fuel.

The Gen-2 Rampage RS-450 is everything that is missing from a full bolt-on Type-R and has been designed to be the ultimate street and circuit Turbo Upgrade. It can be used with the stock engine and fuel system and under these conditions will support up to 470WHP on 93 octane. This upgrade is intended to be used without the need for port injection or a built motor, however, we do recommend Fuel System Upgrade to maximize the potential of this turbo and protect your engine. The Gen-2 RS-450 is a direct replacement for your stock turbo and can be tuned using Hondata. We have upgraded the compressor and turbine wheels to larger diameters and improved aero (details below including Dyno graphs), reduced the blade count from 12 to 9 on the turbine wheel, and anodized the billet aluminum 10 blade compressor wheel for added durability. As a part of our service to you, we ceramic coat the turbine housing to retain thermal energy, maximize efficiency, and reduce engine bay temperatures. In addition, we are including our grade 5 titanium exhaust studs as standard. A new OEM turbo to cylinder head gasket is also included for your convenience.

The approach to our design and wheel sizing was to retain as much of the factory spool characteristics and significantly open up the mid-range and top-end power band. It was also important to consider the limitations of the factory housings and size our wheel combination accordingly to get the longest life possible from an upgraded unit.

The RS-550 utilizes a 713c Inconel 54/47mm turbine wheel, anodized billet Aluminum 54/67mm compressor wheel, and a dual ceramic ball bearing CHRA. Using precision CNC machining processes we are able incorporate all this new hardware into an OEM set of housings for maximum reliability and parts availability.

We have currently tested this turbo to 480-500whp on the stock engine & clutch, with Hondata FlashPro and fuel system upgrade while maintaining less than 85% duty on the HPFP. We are looking forward to continued testing with alternative fuels.

Initial RS-550 Results on 92 Octane! So heres our best 2 graphs from our hub dyno, unfortunately the MAF is becoming an issue with the extra air flow. So we have some stuff in the works to hopefully resolve that and get our torque to look a bit better up top which will really boost the peak power #s. So we're not done yet! This is just the beginning but already looking promising.
This car is 100% stock engine and clutch, we added a PRL intercooler and an HVI, and of course the hondata FSU. (Currently in stock)

The tune is very safe, and ramped boost in conservatively to protect the rods. I think we were around 32psi on the dyno, and seeing closer to 34 on the street.

Next week we have an appointment to put the car on a Dynojet chassis dyno so that should hopefully provide a more comparable set of results to what most other companies are using.
So stay tuned as we will be releasing more info on the power potential of this turbo, pricing, and lead times!

Each kit is built entirely in house and comes complete with premium quality lines and fittings. This TD04 turbocharger was developed as a direct upgrade for the Honda Civic X Type R (FK8) models. Like all MHI turbochargers it has a special journal bearing and a bigger Inconel exhaust wheel for increased airflow. With this TD04 you get a durable and robust turbocharger in Japanese manufacturing quality for plug'n'play conversion up to 450hp. Only small adjustments are necessary.

All MHI Performance Turbochargers are original Made in Japan!

MHI Performance turbochargers are a high-quality result of an extremely precise production in the motor sports department of the Japanese turbocharger manufacturer Mitsubishi.
All MHI Performance turbochargers have a very wide compressor map which provides optimum performance at any speed and does not know the typical pumping. Compared to other manufacturers, MHI compressor maps have a higher efficiency over a wider range.

In addition, all Mitsubishi Performance Turbos are equipped with double hydrodynamic bearings. The exhaust wheels made of Inconel, in perfect symbiosis with compressor wheels from the latest development, convince with an amazingly early response and torque development even at low rev ranges and with low boost pressure. This means better drivability in the lower and medium speed ranges, thanks to the best power delivery in the feared turbo lag.

MHI = Made in Japan - Not Made in China!

MHI stands for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. This is a department of the vehicle manufacturer Mitsubishi which deals among other things with the production of turbochargers for own and also foreign vehicles. MHI turbochargers are also used in the Porsche Panamera Turbo and BMW 2.0L Turbo.

The MHI turbochargers were among the first turbochargers to come onto the market as China plagiarisms. In particular the proximity to Japan and the Japanese vehicle market made these plagiarisms interesting for China. We would like to point out once again that there are still tons of MHI plagiarisms on offer. However, these have nothing to do with the high-precision manufacturing from Japan. Note: Having been readily available for purchase, there is remarkably, very little information on this turbo that I can find. Information on Pure Turbo’s website shows that these are capable of making 420+whp on pump gas (and likely a FSU). Art of Attack’s FK8 is equipped with this turbo and they seemed confident in one of their posts that it can make 500+whp but dialed it back.

Ever since the launch of CIVIC TYPE R FK8, we have been focusing on the K20C turbo engine potential. The ECU analysis has been done and settings changed multiple times with the goal of further improving engine performance.

Just optimizing the ECU settings, while of course ensuring the safety margin, for boost, ignition timing and fuel adjustment, has improved the output by about 40ps compared to stock. The further need to improve the middle to low speed range torque and high-speed output has led us to developing this high-capacity turbocharger.

This turbocharger is using the latest highly efficient MHI turbo that supplies genuine FK8 one. The latest CFD analysis technology helped optimizing the compressor shape and turbine blades. Along with the increased diameter it resulted in higher output without sacrificing the medium to low-speed torque.

Additionally, the same housing with the genuine turbine allows you to make the replacement easy and fast (bolt-on).
The shape of the compressor and the number of blades have been optimized, high flow rate and high boost achieved by increasing the genuine 58Φ diameter to 65Φ.
The blade shape and the number of turbine wheels have also been enhanced and diameter modified from 47Φ to 52Φ. The suppressed moment of inertia and increased capacity reduced exhaust pressure and improved the response.

Perform NC FK8 G Series Turbo kits feature Garrett G30 or G35 Internal gated turbochargers that are able to use the factory wastegate. This kit also features many products we already build in house. The CNC header plate, CNC oil feed kits, CNC Lower Downpipe Flanges are all used in this kit. Our main goal of the R660 RED was to develop a robust and reliable turbocharger. First step to this was ditching the stock sized TD04 format. The TD04 design is popular amongst OE turbochargers for its small compact size and quick response. However trying to squeeze more than 400HP from such a small turbo is difficult to do reliably and comes at the cost of shortened life. In order to achieve our goals we needed to over build and upsize everything.

We built the R660 around a TD05 bearing housing. The TD05 bearing housing is about twice the size of the TD04. This allowed us to use a full sized 8mm ceramic ball bearing for quick spool and increased thrust loads. In order to keep everything cool and reliable. We oversized the coolant passages and used -10AN coolant lines ample cooling.

With a larger TD05 bearing housing we were able to implement a turbine housing with an A/R of 0.81. This significantly reduces the amount of back pressure between the turbo and engine. The solve many issues with unstable boost and overheating.

I have to say, that I enjoyed putting this together as it gave me a chance to skim the different options our platform has.

I do have to say, that I am pretty impressed with the Garret G25-550. To me, it embodies the great leaps that the turbo industry has taken since I was deeply immersed in it over a decade ago. I learned quite a bit in my dabbling on Honda-tech, a lot from reading, and from the OG turbo maestro TheShodan aka Mac from Speed Trapp Consulting, and I certainly keep on learning more and more.

Back in like 2010ish, billet everything was all the rage and now it seems like forged wheels are taking over.

The G25-550 is a pretty darn impressive turbo just based on my limited knowledge of it. Being 48mm, its not only smaller than the stock TD04, but amazingly has a higher horsepower ceiling.

Based on the compressor map provided by garret, the G25-550 should make 450hp rather easily as it falls right in its efficiency range, and should probably be good up to 500hp. The ceiling is so much higher on this than the stock turbo which is technically larger. I think it shows the limitations of the tired TD04 and how much the different mix of turbine sizes, housing, and turbo technology play a role in making good power.

@AlphaDigital you just sent me down memory lane with Mac at Speed Trapp. He built both of my turbos for my build back in 2007 on my 92gsr, along with consulting on my ls2 turbo build. Is he still plugging away at Speed Trapp? I really should give him a call and catch up. I remember the WRC Subaru Team asked for his help, the guy is a genius!!!

Honestly im not sure. I wouldnt be surprised if he was still plugging away there though, he seems like a life-er kind of guy.

I did shoot Speed Trapp a message a while back seeing if they were going to be/interested in developing anything for the FK8 platform but never got a reply.

Ive utilized 2 different STC turbos for my hondas. The first was a GT3255B, and then I swapped that out for the STC reaper which was a blast. I was able to make 430hp and 300lbft on 18lbs and E85 barely putting a scratch into what that unit was capable of on a 81.5mm GSR. I sadly parted that out. Clearly I cant stay away from the turbo honda platform..

Glad to see someone else with familiar background haha

@AlphaDigital I had the reaper as well on a stock b17. Mac knew it was a bit oversized for my stock setup (built motor was delayed at machine shop). I made 336whp on a mustang dyno and 93 octane. Turbo just fricken ripped!

Mac did a photo shoot with my 2 turbos, I’ll have to find the pictures archived somewhere.

Looking at their Instagram they seem legit. I may have to give them a call at that price
If you can get more info to share that would be awesome. It is definitely a priceworthy option if the work and materials are quality.

Great write up! I am in the market for a turbo, was leaning towards the PRL but there is so many other good options to choose from.
