Hey everyone, so my 18 sport touring hatch should be here within the week however I had a question regarding fuel. I know the tune on the sport and touring has a recommendation on using premium however gas just sky rocketed and premium is 1.50 a liter (4.50 a gallon).

Is it safe or will I ruin my car if I just use regular?

I have only used premium for my sport, but i wouldn't think regular will "ruin" the car..

My 17 Sport has only seen premium in the 11,100Km I've driven so far. I've heard rumors of engine tick over time with regular gas but I have no proof and took that with a grain of salt.. regardless, I run premium Shell or Husky.

I use premium in mine (91 octane) since I don't drive all that much. But I wouldn't have a problem using regular if needed.

Lol it's only a few bucks extra per fill, just back out of the deal at this point.

Typically I only fill up with 93 octane. I've filled up with 89 octane a few times and it ran fine. The engine will adjust the timing if you do run 87, but to get the most out of the car, fill it with premium. I do make sure that I follow the recommendation to use only high detergent gas. I stick with Shell, Mobil, or BP.

I thought it's to prevent engine knocking?

The other is to take full advantage of the engine's performance?

I can understand if you could care less about the performance side but you're risking ruining your engine for a few bucks.

Not only I put 91 but I only use Top Tier like Costco, Shell and during summer I put Ultra 94.

Check the manual.
If it says 91 recommended then it's safe to use 87. If it says required use 91.

91 is usually 15cents more than 87 so it's a difference of about $7 more on a full fill-up.

I've only ever used 91. It's only a little more. If the gas is your concern then get a different car.

I only use 93 Octane in mine (EX-T). In the past I also used 93 Octane on cars that were not turbocharged or whatever.

While it would likely compensate for the lower quality fuel of 87, I spring for the extra to keep it running cleaner.

I fill up with premium only. My thinking is if you can’t afford the type fuel that the manufacturer says you should put in, drive less, or buy a different car.

93 only. Although I think the dealer put in the cheap crap when I first got it.
