TPMS is compliments of the government mandate.

It may help that significant fraction of drivers who never check their tires, and in addition, those who they could affect on the road if their tires fail.

The rest of the people keep an eye on their tires. If you are prompted to pump up your tires only when the TPMS lights up, you have already failed to keep yor car in order and drove for some time on a too flat tire(s).

TPMS may be useful even to those drivers who do mind their tires. On a longer trip, you may not be aware you caught a nail or a screw in your tire and the TPMS may wake you up before the car starts pulling to one side, making strange noises and damaging the rim.

I'm still not necessarily a fan of the government TPMS mandate. I would rather welcome police giving tickets for significantly deflated tires.

Tickets are available as an insult to injury but only after you've wrecked or stopped in a forbidden area - like the highspeed lane on the 405. You also can get free points and increase insurance costs.
