I went to a 2018 Civic Sedan LX from a 2001 Accord EX...

While some would say it's a step down from an Accord to a Civic, it's amazing how over the years cars evolve and grow. Specifically, the 2018 Civic feels about the same size as the 2001 Accord, which brings up my question:

Have the Civics always had a small gas tank? I think the one I have is about 12 gal, compared to the 2001 Accord's tank which was 17 gal. For two cars that feel about the same size, it's frustrating that I have to gas up so frequently with this smaller tank. A nice side effect of a more fuel-efficient car would be to have to gas up less often, but that's negated by the smaller tank. (Yes, I know I'm still spending less... but it's also just a frequency thing).

Not a huge issue, just curious if anyone's got any insights here...

They did it to save weight...
Plus you can get 40MPG if you don't gun it everywhere.

Filling up for me is about every two weeks, which is about what I did for my Altima that got me 26-27MPG avg. With an 18gal tank

HankRearden, are you REALLY having to get gas more often with the 2018 Civic vs the 2001 Accord?

If you only get an average of 37 MPG, you should get 444 miles/tank. If your Accord averaged 26 MPG, which is what I got on my 2001 Accord, you should have been getting 442 miles/tank.

In reality, I get closer to 500 miles/tank average on my 2016 Civic, and I've gotten close to 600 miles/tank more than once, when driving conditions were optimal.

I think the tank is 12.4 or 12.6 I routinely get 450+ miles to a tank. Most of my driving is 45-60 mph.

I drove 620 miles straight through with my cruise set to 72-82 with a few slow downs for work zones. Avg 41.9 MPG and got 420-440 miles per tank but I normally fill up a bit early. 400+ miles per tank is generally accepted as being average to above average.

I went through a very similar "downsizing" experience, from '04 TSX (17.1 gal) to the '17 Si (12.4 gal), and I had the exact same "concern" in the beginning. But it turned out just fine, and while I wouldn't object too strongly to a couple extra gallons :), I don't feel like I actually need them that much. The difference in MPG numbers between the two cars made those two tanks last roughly the same distance, on average. Yours should be pretty close as well...

I love the small tank used to add about 14 gallons a week to my last car, now i fill up about the same amount but its always less then 10 gallons, makes using premium worth it when im paying for 4 gallons less:dance:

An Accord is quite a bit larger than a Civic. It similar to my old/current Sonata size wise.

I was also surprised by the small tank but after getting 34mpg routinely in city driving (peaking at 46mpg over one longer trip), it's not an issue.

I typically get slightly more than, or at 400 miles on a tank in my Hatchback Sport. Given that I am not forgiving at all with accelerating from stops and around the backroads I take to work, I'd say it does pretty well on MPG.
